Just another gimmick from a party with no credibility on defence. £10bn wouldn't even touch the sides for a complete UK-wide 'Iron Dome'. The Tories need to review their dodgy sums or be honest about which parts of the country their Patchwork Dome wouldn’t cover. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It’s not been fully spotted but to pay for 50,000 extra prison places the Conservatives have said they would cut foreign aid to £1bn a year, or 0.03% of GDP, a 90% cut. This would not even cover UN and World Bank contributions. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Perhaps we're talking at cross purposes. Whatever the cause of these breaches, we should have secure military bases on British soil. I am asking the govt to act on this which is their job.

James MacCleary MP @jamesmaccleary.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But we have had a series of breaches including bases where there are no US assets. Unless we are saying that we will cease operations overseas altogether then these threats will continue so base security is important and clearly there are issues.

James MacCleary MP @jamesmaccleary.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That's not really the point I'm making here. We should be able to provide security at our own bases for our personnel, aircraft and those of our allies as required. What those bases are used for is a different question.

If it was just another Trump tantrum we'd know about it - he would have made sure of that. No one is denying that there is some sort of security threat or that we have seen a series of breaches at UK bases so it points to a more serious issue in my view.

It appears that the US is withdrawing these planes because they do not believe they are safe on a UK airbase. That is a major concern following the breach at RAF Brize Norton in June. The Defence Secretary and the govt need to get a grip on this issue. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The motion passed at Green Party Conf' actively undermines a 2-state solution, and does not address the rising threats of Islamophobia and Antisemitism here in the UK. This is a divisive motion that pours fuel on the fire of tensions in the UK, and will leave many British Jews feeling less safe.

It is too late to use this to save Starmer's premiership. Whilst I welcome the move, like with so many things with this govt, the work and negotiation should have started a long time ago. Dithering and delays are, in large part, why Starmer is in this mess in the first place.
