James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 24/08/2026If you're interested in the process, each desktop has a stage and occlusion layer, and decor items to mimic how the original games add decor over time as you play. Need to do a tiny bit of light grading on those. Maybe a couple of outdoor items later. 010
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 24/08/2026WIP a game that plays on your desktop (macOS). Interact with Toro Inoue as he goes about his day in the background. 181

James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 20/08/2026Not super happy with the gameplay loop, visually its fine. Loosely based on the Pocket Pikachu device, which was a pedometer that converted steps to watts you could use to purchase berries to feed your Pokémon. Having fun designing for 46mm. Haven’t touched WatchKit since the Gen 1 Apple Watch 🤮 020
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 20/08/2026Pokegatchi? Not sure what to call it, but I saw someone mock up a similar idea for esp32s3, wanted to try it as an Apple Watch app. Ended up building an iOS simulator and widget version. Might grab an older watch and put it in a keychain case. 161
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 17/08/2026From one of my favorite developers, Yutaka "Yoot" Saito (SimTower, Odama). He basically spent his career thinking about what new ideas is nobody pursuing. So I thought, I want to talk to an impolite fish person, not claude. 010
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 17/08/2026Had an agent clean room a detailed design doc of how the original game worked. Loosely reimplemented the core progression without any of the assets or dialog. Great proof of concept but not very polished yet. Just some things out there I thought somebody should try. 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 17/08/2026Voice UI native metal iOS game, very loosely inspired by Seaman for the Dreamcast (1999). Bunch of dumb ideas I wanted to try. Took a stab at a gameplay loop using apple foundation models running on device and voice recognition. 140
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 10/08/2026If you have a developer account (or are brave enough) and want to play Pikmin 1 on macOS, iPad, iOS, etc. here is a native, performant source port. github.com/magikarp/pik... 040
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 31/07/2026Pikmin 1 source port. Runs on macOS, iPad, iPhone. Tested through Forest of Hope, Fixed a few compiler bugs that only affect late-game bosses, untested there. On-screen touch controls are... painful to use but controller plays great. 161
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 25/07/2026Fixing the last couple of TEV bugs for the decomp port of Gamecube Pikmin to macOS. My todo list on visuals are about 98%. Optimistic about jaudio after that, and then just a whole lot of testing! 030
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 22/07/2026This is such a glorious mess I'm having such a blast. Metal shaders, probably not a single blend mode is correct. But it's pikmin 1 on macOS. 030
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 18/02/2026Using Claude Opus 4.6 and Codex 5.3 simultaneously. I can definitely tell which one is a front-end developer and which is a backend dev. All the little bells are going off in my head, like "you can trust this guy to design your backend APIs but don't ask him to center a div" 220
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 12/08/2025With egg prices where they are, if I can continue to get chicken feed from an unlocked shed at work, it pays for itself after harvesting 3,060 eggs 0130
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 11/08/2025They reuse assets and most of the game engine, so they start to feel the same. Would probably recommend the last released one that really interests you. Feels like their remakes are the 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 of their evolving game engine. 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 11/08/2025Very few projects are open to bringing in professional designers looking to contribute to open source. Creates a weird dynamic where I’ve seen it. You’re basically telling someone volunteering their time as a developer how to do their job. It can work but that’s still my theory. 1101
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 11/08/2025They’re solid! Or at least they go on sale for next to nothing a couple times a year and are generally bug-free… 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 07/08/2025Ha neat, I really don't know if it'll "feel" right or not. 000
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 07/08/2025Solid implementation! I wondered if it would feel smoother to link to the post in a new tab if the user attempts to interact with a comment. Would feel aggressive to redirect in the same window. Popping up in a new tab might be surprising. I guess "Go to post" does less harm. 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 15/07/2025This is going to dovetail excellently with your last video when you have enough clarity to post about it > War update – Is Trump helping Russia now? > War update – Trump changes mind (again) 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 07/07/2025I used to borrow my buddy’s metro back in the day, and we only really drove it on the part of I-5 that was 60mph, because the vibration in that thing at highway speed was a bit unnerving. 110

James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 06/07/2025You’re allowed to park in a regular spot if one wheel is over the curb or straddling the line. Key to the technique is you have to inconvenience someone else somehow. 010
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 02/07/2025Indexes on likes is literally the entire struggle for me — everything else is gravy. Need to implement a table swapping or partition rotation strategy. 120
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 21/06/2025Yeah that's what I was going to say. Headline will be like, "Some famous guy you figure you'll never meet" and apparently I can afford to bribe them? 010
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 21/06/2025Ahhhhhh I should have bought this while I was in Taipei….. it’ll never come to the US. I’m so stupid (Amy) rose. 010
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 20/06/2025The feed technically works now but there's an incomplete likes table that fed into the first build of the affinities table, so, it's basically a "What's hot" feed. And "What's hot" on Bluesky is like: do you want a lot of politics, or a super duper huge amount of politics? 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 20/06/2025I normally have tons of free time but for some weird reason everything piled up into a 1-2 week period. Travel, got sick, tax stuff, had a few big work-related things, and this has been limping along for probably the last month. 110
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 20/06/2025Feed server effectively ran out of space. Probably need to migrate to a new server with ~1tb ssd, more time consuming than anything. The upside is, after 3 days of downtime you can just truncate the likes table to free up space 😅 Will probably start working in a day or so. 140
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 07/06/2025Ran out of disk space. Actually ran out of disk space every day for the last 2 weeks to be more accurate! Going to bite the bullet and rebuild the likes index. Feed will probably be offline for some period of time after the current cache expires. Could be an hours but my day is your night, right? 240
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 31/05/2025"Pornographic Images with Rivers" This is what happens when you let an LLM label clusters based on alt tags, 0.001% of the time 🧐 www.transparent.se/image-cluste... The alt tag is almost always "IEMBot Image TBD" so.... 🤡 171
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 26/05/2025fun reminder for me that design tools have traditionally not enabled spell check by default. This was the case in Photoshop back in the day, but figma still requires a few extra clicks to check spelling. So like, "I came here to adjust kerning and layout, not spele althiest correctly" 010
James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 26/05/2025Send me a DM later if you want to trade notes on a discover feed for Skyswipe! I haven't really implemented everything on videos, but I built the GPU pipeline to do the video clustering, etc. and sometime next month I plan to rewrite the main discover feed to be simpler to self-host / open source. 120

James Futhey @jamesfuthey.com · 20/05/2025I hope you’re like “I came here to get the REAL ID, but after all of this I don’t even want it!” Then renew your old ID for 8 years or something. Still possible in WA until recently 040
