Quite impressed with how little has changed in the actual building from the postcard. Just that when Leeds built the Michael Sadler Building it was over the location from where the photograph for the postcard was taken.

I think one of the reasons they were bailed was that there was probably no evidence that they were stealing red diesel. They may have been equipped, but their vans had logos on them indicating they were a fuel company, hence the barrels and pumping equipment in the back of the van.

I've seen 22 of the The 100 Best TV Shows of the 21 Century. Wondered where The West Wing was, but that started in the last millennium in 1999.

Just a reminder of some basic economics, as in demand and supply analysis. If you raise the price of something, the quantity demanded will fall. If you raise the price of something that has many substitutes, your total revenue will fall.

Throw in LLE and modularisation, suddenly documenting what you've done becomes critical to student mobility. Why do I need to prove everytime to an institution what I've done. This will grow exponentially with modularisation.

The devastation and destruction was shown. It was awful.   The cycle of news, of the plane crashing, the towers collapsing, the dust and debris cloud was right there in my face and it just added to my shock and disbelief.   Those memories of that day have stayed with me ever since then.

I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on, but as the day progressed it became much more apparent what had happened.   I listened to the radio on the way home. I went to the gym and as I cycled away on the cycle machine the news was on the screens in front of me.

However of course realised later on that it was excessive demand on their servers which was causing their site to fail to load.   In the end I went to the canteen where the news was on the TVs in there and there was loads of people, students and staff, just watching the TVs.

9/11 I was working in my office in a college in Somerset , when someone came and said a plane had crashed into a skyscraper in New York.   I went to the BBC News website, but it wouldn’t load. I initially put it down to the college network.

Libraries tossing out weeded titles is not a travesty. 🧵 1. libraries MUST weed. We don't have magic shelves with unlimited space. 2. we do try to find alternatives to recycling. Book sales, free tables, and places like Better World Books get the majority of weeded titles. 1/3

According to this source, the building was damaged, it was not destroyed. "Although the School of Art was damaged by bombing in 1940, it continued to be used by the painting and decorating departments while the rest of the school's activities were carried on in temporary premises."

So the real question is.... who is going to tell the University of Coventry?
110
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Final perspective. This is from a 1963 aerial photograph of coventry and I have circled the location of the School of Art on Ford Street.
210
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
This is from the 1914 Pharus Map of Coventry which shows the School of Art on Ford Street. So, think we can move away from Ribbon Factory and the Burges.
010
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
This is a ribbon factory (in the same area) which survived the bombing. I would suspect that the original School of Design looked a lot more like this before the new building opened on Ford Street.
010
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Again the bomb damage map implies that it wasn't destroyed in the blitz.
010
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
There are sources saying it was demolished for road widening.
010
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Which makes me think that this is wrong. This is not the old ribbon factory.
110
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Of course then you find this which says that this is the School on Ford Road.
110
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
According to the bomb damage map, not too much of the the Burges was hit by bombs. So, it might have survived the war.
010
James Clay @jamesclay.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Another rabbit hole.... I think the challenge here is that the building in the postcard is the old Ribbon Factory on the Burges. In 1863 a new School of Art building was opened on Ford Street. This (new) building was then destroyed in the blitz in 1940.
