We worry that rising pressures from humans, invasive species (such as the African Tulip, which might act as an ecological trap), and the interaction with these and cyclones might be driving population declines and potentially forcing Hylaeus into highland refuges. Much more work needs to be done!

Despite being the most abundant species, we still inferred declines commensurate with a "Critically Endangered" IUCN status using Stairway Plots. We failed to find Hylaeus in the lowlands (where it has previously been known and intact forest and food plants exist).

In a nutshell, they remain difficult to catch. Of the six Fijian Hylaeus that we thus far know of, we could only catch Hylaeus navai in any numbers and, over a month of full-on field work, we caught 101 individuals overall!

I'm very proud of my Honours student, Tegan Edwards for publishing her first first-author paper this week in Ecology and Evolution! She researched on Fiji's canopy-dwelling Hylaeus and worked incredibly hard to find these bees and to then untangle the story that followed... doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

For non-scientists, LTER programs run for decades, so scientists can learn how ecosystems change over time. These programs cover ecology, evolution, systems biology, and it includes animals, plants, even microbes, and more. We learned so much about how our world works with LTERs. This sucks :(
