There’s something wonderfully cosy about an old Irish kitchen, where a solid-fuel range replaced the open hearth and became the warm heart of the home. Cooking, heating water and keeping the chill away -- all from one hardworking stove. You can almost feel the warmth in this room.

Built around 1480 by the McMahon Clan, Carrigaholt Castle has guarded the Shannon Estuary for more than five centuries. In 1588, ships of the Spanish Armada anchored nearby seeking help. Captured in County Clare's 12 O'Clock Hills, this beautiful Foxglove, also known as "Faerie Fingers," is as fascinating as it is striking. Though poisonous, it gave rise to the heart medication Digoxin. Irish folklore warned that bringing it indoors invited bad luck.
