I caught up with The Woodland Trust to discuss their campaign to increase tree planting. As we see increasing temperatures & hotter summers greater tree cover will be vital. Places like Newham will need support to increase tree numbers to ensure our streets are cooler & safer

Update on the Canning Town Station escalator after my joint letter with Cllr Rohit Dasgupta to Deputy London Mayor Seb Dance. The good news is repairs have started on the main escalator between the tube station & bus station. It should be working again by the end of the month.

I met with Tideaway which has been a massive project to improve the sewage systems and clean up the river. It has had a big impact on our constituency through its connection to Beckton sewage treatment works.

Go Ahead’s Silvertown depot serves routes all across East London. Most of the vehicles are now electric and they use impressive tech to get repairs and maintenance done quicker. I also heard about the plans to fit HVAC units to mitigate against future heatwaves.

I had a lovely sunny Sunday going around the constituency visiting play streets and street parties. There were bouncy castles, DJs, arts and crafts and chances for kids to play safely and for everyone to chat to their neighbours.

I was in Silvertown this week to visit Gee & Ivan at The Tate Institute Built as the social club for sugar refinery workers. It was a valued community space but has been empty for years REinsTate are restoring the building in a sustainable way, bringing it back to the community

I joined MPs & Peers in writing to the Foreign Secretary about the targeting LGBT+ community by the Turkish Government including detentions, raids & blocking of websites. It’s important the UK acts to condemn the actions & make urgent representations to the Turkish Government.

Eastside Community Heritage received their National Archives accreditation, a huge achievement! ECH are preserving the memories of people whose lives should not be overlooked or forgotten just because they didn't take place in grand buildings but on ordinary streets in East London.

This morning I was at Scott Wilkie’s Breakfast Club with Minister Paul Waugh. Free Breakfast Clubs mean that kids are starting their day fed and ready to learn and improvements to School Food Standards will make those breakfasts more balanced and healthier.

It is time the Canning Town Station escalator was fixed. This disruption is causing serious inconvenience. It can’t be left out-of-service & TfL have given no date for when it will be repaired. I have written, with Cllr Rohit Dasgupta, asking for timeline & date of completion.

Where have you been this summer? I’ve been flying airplane simulators, playing badminton with The Mayor, meeting emergency services, marching in London Pride, running a summer school, cheering on dragon boats and climbers and helping constituents. Basically I’ve been busy!

I hosted a Newham heritage celebration with local organisations. Archive material and a quiz got everyone excited for the opening of the Newham Heritage centre in 2027. Thank you to The GMB for sponsorship, the union is an important part of Newham’s story, supporting people for over a century.

It’s a lie that young people are not interested in politics, it’s a lack of opportunity not talent. This summer scheme created opportunity and literally opened doors: Newham Council, City Hall, The Supreme Court, Downing Street and Parliament. Thank you to all who made this week a success.

At the East Summer School there were around 200 courses available with partnership organisations. Whether they were dancing, presenting or rollerskating at the showcase the participants all spoke about making friends and enjoying their summer learning a new skill.

Today I visited the Summer Splash scheme in the Royal Victoria Dock with the Mayor of Newham Supported by Port of London Authority, Royal Docks Waterways, GLA & Atlantic Pacific; it has a lido, sandpits, deckchairs. It also offers the Swim England & RNLI ‘Swim Safe’ scheme for 7-14 year olds.

Whipps Cross and Newham General Hospital will both receive a Mental Health Emergency Department. Rather than the stress of A&E the mental health emergency department should provide a calm environment where people can be assessed quickly and connected to the right ongoing care.

Today, I visited Beckton Pure Gym to see their newly renovated spaces. The workout spaces have been improved and updated including the women’s only space. It was good to see how busy and well used the gym is by local residents.

I met with Yewande, who is a Kinship Navigator. Kinship carers are family or friends who care for a child when their parents are unable to. We spoke about the challenges facing local kinship families and how they often go unrecognised.

I know that phone thefts are affecting my constituents, it’s raised at a neighbourhood safety forums, in classrooms and I’ve seen it myself. Just before recess I asked whether companies could be doing more so that phone thieves cannot continue to profit from their crimes.
