The autumn arrival of yellow-browed warblers is pure magic every year. This season we’ve been on Shetland taking genomic samples from these enigmatic birds, in the hope we can link ’reverse’ migration to underlying genomic factors 🧬🗺️ excited to see what we find!

Probably no surprise that my #favouriteplant is the glorious Marsh Gentian. I love everything about them & this year they provided some extra magic. Watching as the sun set, it was incredible to see the gorgeous blue flowers close for the night, something I'd not observed before. 😍 #wildflowerhour
Marsh Gentian flowers closing in the setting sun, Purbeck, Dorset. Beautiful.

Conditions looked superb last night but quiet: 13 Vestal, 11 Small Mottled Willow, 14 Delicate, 11 Rush Veneer, 3 Turnip, European Corn Borer, Silver Y. However the Nicotiana has 3-4 Convolvulus Hawk nectaring at the flowers at dusk each night @dorsetmoths.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social

Counted 208 Vestal moth 🫨 this AM on walk thru a wild bird seed mix nr Horton, inland Dorset. Likely 100s more present. Seemingly becoming well established in the wider countryside after arriving earlier this summer?? 🤔 @dorsetmoths.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Lots of Clouded Yellow butterflies in recent days, I counted a minimum of 17 on Pentridge Down y’day including one Helice form. Looks to be a very good year for this species. The butterflies love nectaring on Small Scabious which is now in full flower across the down. @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Most UK media reports on June heatwave failed to mention climate crisis
Exclusive: Analysis of nearly 2,500 articles finds almost three-quarters made no reference to global heating Most of the UK media stories about the record-breaking heatwave that struck in June failed to mention the climate crisis, analysis has found. Nearly 2,500 articles about the extreme heat – when temperatures topped 37C, a record for the time of year – appeared in the UK’s nine main national daily media publications. But nearly three-quarters of them – about 72% – left out any mention of global heating or the climate, according to the analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU). After 25 years employment in the environment & education sector, today is my 1st day working as a freelance ecologist, facilitator, & educator! I'm really excited at the start of this new journey - please do drop me a line if you have any bird survey, facilitation, or environmental education needs.
