I disembarked at Vienna Hütteldorf, taking a local train for the last stretch. Conclusion: Vienna to Gothenburg is doable by train, but 26 hours straight on tracks is my personal limit. In the 2030s, the Fehmarn Belt tunnel will shorten the trip, but then you’ll miss the impressive Belt bridges…

As mini cabins are great for sleeping but not so much for sitting, I decided to get off the Nightjet in Salzburg. I would have reached Vienna even earlier on the faster day trains, but everything seems to be a little delayed this morning. Now on the Westbahn bound for Vienna West station.

Danish conductors are always so excited about the Belt Bridges, sharing trivia about the construction. German conductors completely ignore Rendsburger Hochbrücke, a missed opportunity. A few minutes late into Hamburg, giving me two hours to find something to eat and to stretch my legs.

I almost didn’t board my train, as I was expecting a DSB red Talgo. However, the grey Class MF rubber-nosed diesel on Track 7 turned out to be my EuroCity to Hamburg instead. Surprisingly with WiFi, working power plugs and reservations on display - outperforming the Talgo in these categories.

A swift ride south on the Öresundståg, which was filling up quickly. Half the train disembarked at Copenhagen Airport this morning. A few minutes late, we arrived at Copenhagen Central Station with enough time for a walk around the historic terminal.

Aaaaaaand all the way back. The departure for the Copenhagen-Hamburg service was moved up, so I also had to leave one hour earlier than planned from Gothenburg. Too bad that I can’t stay for Midsommar.

Four countries. Four trains. Approx. 1,500 kilometres. And just when I thought that nothing could go off rails now, the X2’s engine driver had to reset one of the brakes at Helsingborg. Onwards, our maximum speed was limited to 150 km/h. So in the end, we reached Gothenburg 30 minutes late. Godnatt!

Always fascinating that you can cross Øresund Bridge and in a few minutes you are in another country. 🇸🇪 I’ve made the last connection in Malmö C for my first trip on a Swedish X2. I’m celebrating with a Kardemummabullar from a familiar bakery.

Now crossing the border into Denmark. 🇩🇰 Interesting announcement by the conductor: “Exiting the train in Padborg will be only possible from coach 19.” The reason seems to be a quick border check by the Danish police…

The Talgo 230 left on time for Copenhagen. However, coaches in reverse order, no reservations on display, and my seat blocked with tape. In addition, there is no power from the outlets. At least the displays know that there are technical issues. Luckily, Rendsburger Hochbrücke is always a treat.

I can confirm other reviews on the mini cabins: a bit small if you are taller than 1.8 metres, little room for luggage, aggressive AC. Nevertheless, a great option if you are a sole traveller. We pulled into Hamburg on time. Next is the train to Copenhagen.
