Big Tech took control of the ad infrastructure and money, the biggest social media platforms have been consistently tightening the noose on social referrals to news orgs for years and now AI is devastating search traffic. This is not going to be a survivable environment for lots of news publishers.

Big big Mapping Prejudice data update today: We have updated our Washington DC racial covenants data to include 20,000+ covenants that were previously identified by our collaborators at Mapping Segregation DC. The combined DC dataset is now at 27,600 covenanted parcels (and counting!).
A map of racial covenants in Washington DC. Covenants, marked as green polygons, cover wide swaths of the District outside the central city, most densely to the north and northeast. Other large patches are present in the southwest and southeast portions of the district.

Huge fix. I couldn't fathom why they left that two-block gap when they re-did Lake. Still can't. And the southbound Hennepin issue - a good fix for that intersection and good to finally address the delivery delivers issue, but doesn't this just move the bike path/bike lane mismatch down a block?

City Like a Burnt Marshmallow. Minneapolis, Minnesota

This fun shot is the exact site of "Silver Cascade", a fantastic waterfall where Tuttle's Creek once entered the river from @dinkytown.bsky.social. In 1883 the falls were cut off from their source by the railroad, then the whole creek was buried in 1899. Water still wants to go here though!
Black and white image of the majestic "silver cascade", from dry glass plate negative by Illingworth in 1868. The St Paul & Pacific rail line had already gone through just above it on a trestle. As the line was widened for the Stone Arch Bridge in 1883, the falls began to disappear. 1903 sanborne insurance map with the lost falls and creek circled in red. The quadruple track of the Great Northern transcontinental railway is just north of it, the Stone Arch Bridge is off sheet on the left.

When Google strips all this away by harvesting an "answer" and displaying it at the top of the page, the bargain between Google and the open web breaks down. Google is extracting 100% of the value from the websites it summarizes, and giving nothing back in return. 7/

There's no evidence of Nicholson entering the capitol or committing any violence. He said he was there to "show my support for the greatest president of my lifetime."

Jake Steinberg @jakesteinberg.com · 29/06/2026
In response, Nicholson said he left the area "when things turned violent." However, our analysis shows he was well past a security barricade that had earlier been violently overtaken by Proud Boys militia members. He was there after the capitol had been breached and police issued a call to disperse.

Walker got a tip that Brian Nicholson was on the capitol grounds during the Jan. 6 attack. We analyzed over a hundred videos released in a hack of the conservative social media site Parler in 2021, and placed Nicholson near the capitol steps around 3 p.m. that day.

This comes on top of the decision last fall to move printing operations to Iowa, layoff 125 printing plant employees, and sell the printing plant building. It appears their management decisions have not sufficiently improved cashflow.
