My favorite way to design is affordance first. Sometimes that means mechanics drive characters, sometimes the opposite. It depends on what your constraint is. I love hearing stories about how decisions have been reached through design. Also Where's My Water is one of my favorites. More stories!

There was an era of working on EverQuest when the annual Fan Faire was in Vegas. Quarks Bar became a staple. Once a friend revealed memorized quotes from the Klingon translation of Hamlet. The response from the fully costumed Klingon of "Ah, I see you know the works of the bard." sent us howling.

Not at all the same visually, but there's a puzzle in one of the games on Board where the player drags a playhead across a segment of magnetic tape to decipher a conversation from partially destroyed evidence. Move too fast/slow and you can't understand the speech. youtu.be/cxUxpvQXgXY?...
