Something being popular isn't reason enough, especially given that apps with more resources seem to be moving away from blurhash. Take your example. I guessed the image might be a seascape. It wasn't. Compare your example to a 1 kB AVIF:

A blur that's vaguely blue up top, then kinda red in the lower middle, and black in the bottom left.

A blur that clearly shows a blue sky with some clouds, what looks like a building in the lower left, and a pyramid-shaped thing in the lower middle.

It's pronounced "leed-ing"...

I understand that different places say words in different ways... But when you say that you're going to take the lead, you don't say it like the word for the metal...

Stuff like this drives me crazy. Why do all these YouTube people have these weird ways of mispronouncing words.

I still think there's something in extreme compression + post-process blur. Eg, this is a 1kb AVIF with some post-process blur. You can tell what it is. I'm sure a dedicated format/effort could get this number down further.

Watch out! Chrome has a huge bug with <input type="number"> which causes values to change unexpectedly. It's fixed in Chrome 150, but that won't land until the end of June.
