Um ok but you’re not engaging with the fundamental point which is Obamacare included a public option and Medicare expansion which is basically what you are currently advocating for, and Lieberman killed it. And then you call it a Republican plan. Just wholly disingenuous and not factual.

I mean.. the famous saying of giving someone enough rope to hang themself is pretty pertinent here. Just like Ossoff broadly smiling and welcoming Trump to Georgia every day between now and Election Day.

You’re either lying on purpose or just not engaged with this topic to really speak to it. Obama spent all his political capital on ACA, got fucked by Lieberman, Dems got hammered and some guy named McConnell spent the next 6-16 years on a dedicated policy of obstruction and killing any Obama effort

Thanks, been there and done that and in a foreign country to boot. Not playing games and if you read my posts yeah it’s stressfully and scary. But you’re doing the thing will and sky pointed to. bsky.app/profile/jaja...

500k medical debt and not being able to pay it is what forces people to bankruptcy. What has just been described is actually negotiating a bill and payment

Hmm well as a human with facts at my fingertips and lived experience in this system I can hold multiple ideas in my head and say obfuscating the reality is not helpful in terms of solving actual problems. Hope that helps. Yes it’s an imperfect system does not excuse creating false narratives

Did it show up on their credit report? Or was it a bill negotiated in the early stage of that 3 years to an amount owed by the patient on a payment plan and some larger amount paid by insurer. This was not a debt and not sent to collections.

Yeah a bill is not a debt

Incomplete info here but seems like the NICU stay went into the next billing year so that ended up hitting their out of pocket which meant they were obligated to pay it, rather than whatever a “standard” birth rate was and had probably planned for. But yeah extra 800 bucks a month not easy

Also I’m interested, if you are worried about those metrics will you be recommending a loved one travels to Bosnia or Egypt for their childbirth.

Ok but why do you think it is that we spend more on healthcare than Egypt? Do you think you spend more on entertainment or food or transportation than someone in Egypt as well? Yes there are fundamental issues in our system and I’m all for reform but it’s not as simple as public option will fix all

Pointing to broad top line indicators isn’t helpful. You wanna have a baby in Egypt be my guest? My team at work is in DK. We almost moved there, I have looked at this. Mostly anyone who can afford it has supplementary insurance and some stuff like dental is only covered that way.

So like Japan, Korea, Germany, Austria? All comps but also all have private insurance options and tend to have high out of pocket costs. Netherlands, Switzerland? Regulated private insurance, not public. It’s a math problem and about incentives, ensuring enough providers are in, not magic.

Not really that can provide the quality of service at scale and frequency that Americans expect / demand
131 0
jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 16h
and we should be really honest about the public option - it is rationed (longer wait times, fewer specialists) and provided at a general lower quality than Americans are used to. Yes, raise the floor by all means, but we shouldn’t kid ourselves about unrealistic goals

These countries also generally have two systems, public and private, and if you can afford it you go to the private one for urgent or specialist needs. Guess why? People who can afford it want their services. This often even includes basic dental

When you get a bill from a provider it often has an initial amount that looks scary - and then they submit to insurance. Ofc this is not exactly the same but we have to navigate these administrative systems as adults all the time. It sucks. But narratives and facts matter

jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 16h
I mean we are working from imperfect information but the 3 years they were paying some amount, presumably 833 per month, I have a hard time believing there was not a plan here. Sure first few weeks/months are stressful as the parties sort it out but it was not a debt
200 0
jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 16h
that’s for a host of reasons and not what’s being discussed here, but thanks for playing. The point, in case you care, is that facts matter and misconstruing the stress of a 500k bill as “medical debt” doesn’t contribute productively to solving our problems

Often those other countries have many additional layers of private insurance to cover this situation and/or do not have access to the same level of care or technology

Yeah I have first experience 2x. Nobody said it was a perfect system. But sounds like they had a high risk pregnancy and did all the right things in lead up and even then had an emergent situation which they had covered at reasonable cost to them.

Well, since they were on an ACA plan - 833 bucks a month for 36 months, for the healthy life of a child and mother, services rendered by the most highly qualified professionals using first in class technology? Seems ok tbh

Nobody is downplaying their experience. In my posts I said it was scary and stressful and in fact shared my common experience in this exact scenario. But I don’t share my story and state I had 80k in medical debt and the system sucks bc of that bc it’s not true.

ah no he was pointing to why he isn’t on here, as people with a grounding in facts and the real world, trying to have a conversation about them is really hard - eliding the truth or emphasizing certain aspects is a form of lying. Broadly speaking this place has real problems with facts

And you are not helping by obscuring facts and parlaying emotional situations into social media cred. Facts matter when it comes to grown ups solving real problems bsky.app/profile/jaja...

Are you a bot? Cause I was here before ACA and been here for all the attempts to kill it and efforts to implement MFA or some equivalents. Americans certainly do not just accept this. Nobody, including healthcare providers, are super happy about our system. Ok maybe insurance companies are.

100%.. a lot of the charges and charge codes are tied to negotiated rates between providers and insurance and are fully automated onto your bill.. call and talk to people and even flat out negotiate.

jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 17h
I think the overall theme about the post, this place and social in general is that facts don’t matter and generating the emotional response is most important. And the fact this thread has gone on this long reinforces that. And that’s bad for a huge mode of communication in society right now.

By the way, I have been in this position. I had an 80k bill and it was complicated wrt international providers, cobra, Travellers insurance. But I didn’t have an 80k debt - I ended up paying like 4k after the various parties sorted things out. That’s how this stuff works.

… but it was resolved, there were ongoing discussions about resolving it and they were actively on a payment plan for 3 years. Thats not a 500k medical debt.

“500k medical debt”

jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 17h
It actually sounds like they were on a payment plan for their portion (30k) which took 3 years. These are annoying and byzantine systems to navigate especially as individuals and this can be scary and stressful but it doesn’t help to misrepresent the facts
1110 0
jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 17h
It was stressful? Paperwork and bureaucracy suck. And they got the best healthcare possible in an emergency situation during the most stressful event we generally experience in life.

jajajaboo.bsky.social @jajajaboo.bsky.social · 18h
Did you read the posts? They said they had 500k in medical debt. Then in 2 paragraphs explained that they paid 30k and the rest was written off. That’s a billing and clerical error between providers and insurance company and not a medical debt they were forced to pay.

That sucks… Does seem kinda weird bc their autonomous truck partnership with Aurora has LiDAR centrally and full sensor package from what I’ve seen, but I guess that’s a difference in outsourcing the platform to a vendor (and maybe physical limitations on space)

Fine, because those are generally purpose oriented within a broader context or storyline / objective. The violence is typically a means to an end or serves a purpose or makes “sense” contextually. Now if the game is “SAW” and you are Jigsaw, I have concerns.

Not just hurts you but is a sign of obvious issues and antisocial behavior - if your kid was spending dedicated time devising and implementing torture on their toys it would be a big warning sign.
