When they tell you to put rocks carefully back in place while exploring tidepools, it is mostly to keep the little ecosystems healthy – be aware, however, that it is also a precaution against tide-pool hoarding sea-dragons, because, trust me, they will KNOW if their rocks are out of place. #smaugust

By this point I'd already tested out the colors in my sketchbook, so I knew they would blend to get the effect I wanted. Once I’ve got the light/dark areas established and basic color areas blocked out lightly, I can just keep layering more and more to get it to the final color/value intensity.

Here I layer over Yellow Ochre in both the darkened areas and the untouched areas in order to establish the base color. I had several reference pictures helping me to know where to lay in those dark areas, and what the final colors should be.
