WHO-prequalified generics have substantially improved availability in many low- and middle-income countries. In the EU/EEA, however, no currently available rifapentine formulation has EMA approval, leaving countries dependent on exceptional importation or special-access mechanisms. Full article:

The result was rifampicin. Its introduction helped transform TB treatment from a therapy lasting around 18 months towards the much shorter regimens that followed. And a nice detail: the rifamycins were named after Rififi, the French crime film the researchers liked. /3

TB thus appears on both sides of Francoist Spain’s diplomatic transformation, providing a lens through which to see Spain changing the international system to which it sought to belong.

Jaime Manzano @jaimemanzano.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
On 28 May 1951, Spain joined WHO. And TB followed Spain into this new international order. In 1952, WHO sent a TB consultant to assess the situation in Spain. WHO and Spain ultimately decided not to establish a specific TB programme, prioritising other areas.

Then came a remarkable continuity. The same José Alberto Palanca who had represented Spanish public health in the Axis health networks was involved in Spain’s return to multilateral health cooperation.

By 1950–51, Francoist Spain was looking elsewhere. The UN reversed its diplomatic boycott in 1950 and, in 1951, Spanish TB expert Benítez Franco received the Medal of Honour of the French Committee against Tuberculosis. This is a recognition to Spain’s changing relations with Western democracies.

In 1941, Spain’s Director-General of Health, José Alberto Palanca, travelled through Germany and Italy. In Berlin, he attended an international TB conference intended to establish a new international anti-tuberculosis organisation within the Nazi “New Europe”.

Tuberculosis offers a fascinating window into Francoist Spain’s changing place in the world. In the 1940s, TB connected Spanish public health to the international networks of the Axis. A decade later, it reappeared as Spain entered the WHO-led international health system. #TBsky

His conclusion wasthat, with such conditions, it was hardly surprising that TB killed 40,000–60,000 people in Spain every year. His prescription? Affordable housing, nutritious food, regulated working hours and sufficient rest. /3

“What are all those people with tuberculosis who walk our streets, attend public events alongside us, and enter our own homes at every turn—taking part in the most varied aspects of social life and even the most intimate moments of family life—if not sources spreading contagion?” (1916,Castellvi) /5

There are multiple places where access delays occur, all deserving attention... and yet, per the actual report, the single longest delay, which is entirely within the control of pharma companies wanting to sell drugs faster, is in... those companies themselves filing new drugs w/ Health Canada.🤔
Screenshot of the four paragraphs of the "Timelines across the access pathway" section of the report, with the sentence "Evidence indicates that submissions to Health Canada are often filed significantly later than in peer jurisdictions, by approximately 262 days (median)Footnote7, delaying entry into the Canadian review process." highlighted.
