Happy 15th anniversary to my PhD in Physics! (But I’m a Psychology professor, you ask?) I needed a letter confirming degree completion to start my post doc and someone filled in the form letter too quickly.

The Kingfisher absolutely lit up #uiuc faculty senate during public comment. I am incredulous that racists donate so much money that admin is totally stymied from adopting this adorable bird as our mascot, as supported by numerous measures in both faculty and student senates over the years.

My favorite display item is unsurprisingly this swoopy boi, giving a snapshot of the various categories that these measures could be arranged into and how their prevalence in research has changed over time, with extensive heterogeneity and no clear dominance […] [Original post on scholar.social]
The proportion of study measures published from 1981 to 2022. A dashed line is shown at the median point, 2014. There are 9 lines shown representing the rough categories of the measures. Although overall publications generally increase over time, there’s no clear category of measures that emerges as dominant in the field at any time. The 9 categories are labeled: General power, Equity, Sexual power, Decision-making, Power outcomes, Control, Power processes, Power bases, and Individual differences

Four panel comic by @QueeeerChameleon@instagram.com

1: close up on a green hand holding a sheet of paper showing a survey question, “Please select from the options below: ▫️male, ▫️female”

2: zoom out to show a chameleon colored with the inclusive pride flag sitting on a branch, scribbling furiously on the sheet of paper with a red pen

3: the chameleon pauses to regard their work

4: close up on the paper again shows the male and female response options fully crossed out in red pen, with “no thanks” written in below them, marked with a box with an X next to it

Just returned to the library and highly recommend!
Photo of book cover for Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II by Elyse Graham. The cover photo is a black and white image of a smartly dressed 1940s woman holding a portfolio, standing in an archway, in front of a brick building and a pile of rubblePhoto of text on page 297: “They could do so only because they were experts, themselves, in unsuspected disciplines that turned out to be supremely useful for intelligence work. Disciplines that taught them how to work with messy data. How to sift through paper evidence like newspapers, leaflets, and novels. How to gather clues from unlikely sources like advertisements and society columns. How to read a lot in just a little time. How to look at a pile of cracked and curling pages and see a treasure hunt. How to evaluate claims. How to tell stories. How to come up with audacious methods of solving problems using unlikely data: figuring out military secrets, say, by tracking ball bearings, or railroad rates, or the serial numbers of tank components. How to make arguments that aren't merely summaries of what has been said, but that say something new.
How to understand another country— because the past, too, is another country-on its own terms. If you're going to fight a war, you can't just put boots on the ground; you also have to put ground under the boots, in the form of maps, blueprints, local knowledge.”

updating stats lecture slides with this illustration of relative versus absolute scales (Idina Menzel is 5’4”)
Photo from the Wicked part 1 premiere of Idina Menzel (5’4”), Cynthia Erivo (5’1”), Ariana Grande (5’1”), Kristin Chenoweth (4’11”) standing side-by-side; Menzel looks, like, 8 feet tall because there are no scale cues in the photo other than their relative heights
