Unsurprisingly, perceived benefit and harm of the drug influence support for legal change, as does personal experience. In general though, there was little support for harsher penalties.

Of note, less than 30% of consumers knew that nitrous oxide use can impact vitamin B12 - an important piece of information when it comes to nitrous oxide.

Self-reported nitrous oxide knowledge was greater in those with experience than without - but the average number of knowledge items correctly answered was less than half (out of 7)

5.2% of consumers reported persistent numbness in the last 12 months, which could be a signal of underlying neurological issues resulting from use.

Although reported adverse effects were common (e.g. cold burns), less than 6% reported experiencing nitrous oxide harm. But, consumers perceived recreational use as a 6/10 in terms of harm - despite relative safety!

This study looks at reasons why New Zealanders use drugs, including legal drugs like alcohol and nicotine. It also looks at what reasons for using drugs are most important to different groups of people.

We are seeking participants who: are 18 years or older, can speak English fluently, who have lived in Aotearoa for at least 1 year, have used a drug (including alcohol and nicotine) at least once in the previous 12 months.

The anonymous survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
