Nearly 10 years after Grenfell, why is Govt still debating how much fire risk residents should tolerate? Leaving flammable cladding in place and non-cladding defects unresolved will not end this crisis. Is it too much to ask that homes are made fully safe and sellable? www.bbc.com/news/article...

We met Baroness Judith Blake, the new Minister for Building Safety, today. We told her plainly: people are still living in unsafe, unsellable homes, facing delays and costs through no fault of their own. They need action now.

Grenfell should have been the moment that made the safety of people in their homes an absolute priority. But nine years later, too many are still living with the consequences of a system that has been far too slow to change. Every delay matters. Promises must become change.

Nine years after Grenfell, people remain trapped in unsafe homes while developers, freeholders & government argue over process, liability and who pays. How many more warnings will it take before Labour stops “monitoring” this crisis and shows the political will to take control?

The Spectrum Building fire in August 2024 was this government’s first warning. Over two years later, there have been more warm words but still no decisive change of approach. They all say resident safety is their utmost priority. But this could not be further from the truth.

This is the consequence of a system created by MHCLG that allows disputes over safety and liability to rumble on building by building. Labour has allowed these Developer Remediation Contract disputes to continue at thousands of buildings instead of taking control.
