![“Now why would we do that, doughgirl?” Firefly stroked the pump and caught the slug. If there was a good sign that they wouldn’t kill me quickly, that was it. “As far as our usual catches go, you’re a prime cut of fillet. We don’t have everything you know. Yet.”
“Even if we did, you’ll end up on another chair with more questions.” Sleepy sounded apologetic then. I wrote it off as more good cop, bad cop, but I wasn’t thinking clearly. Captured by unknowns, told you weren’t going to see your family again, veiled threats that sometimes forgot the veil. Could anyone have stayed cool in that situation?
I broke then. I hadn’t cried for so long my platoon thought my tear ducts dried out.
“She’s done for the night.” Sleepy threw me a handkerchief. “Shingle, we’re going shopping. Firefly, keep an eye on her. Henker, perimeter. Blitz, your rec night.”
Firefly took the ropes. They locked the door and left me alone.
God, I felt so alone then. Nobody was coming. My entire life was somewhere between that farmhouse and the Amazon. I never saw Ray, Steve, Thalia or Dougie again. As far as the outside world was concerned, I was drunk near the Immigration convoy and tried to be a hero.
I’m sorry I missed everyone then too.
