*nods furiously* From “Missing standardization”: Identifying harmful language ideologies in natural language processing work by Melissa Gasparotto, in @bigdatasoc.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Quotation from the journal text: "the opportunistic use of readily available datasets and standards reflects the realities of benchmark-based research whose practices cannot immediately accommodate labor-intensive work with “messy” contemporary data that more accurately reflects the cultural realities of today's active speech communities."

Just read this amazing and thoughtful paper, "Epistemological Fault Lines Between Human and Artificial Intelligence" by @walter4c.bsky.social, Capraro and Perc. They provide some much-needed formal conceptual scaffolding of the epistemic differences between humans and LLMs arxiv.org/pdf/2512.19466

Love this piece on language equity in content moderation tools. The authors argue that rather than focusing on investment equity across languages, como resources and interventions should be motivated by RISKS, e.g. social vulnerability and degree of reliance on the system.

This was one of my favourite papers from EMNLP last October - the authors curate over 14,000 counterfactual sentences in English and Spanish for investigating diverse and often intersectional social biases in LLMS across these ten social dimensions ⤵️

Really love this comparison of lack of AI accountability today to unfair credit reporting practices in the 1960s. Andrews argues that the FRCA effectively built an "epistemic layer" to protect people by defining terms, imposing accuracy standards, and creating an audit trail...

Do multilingual large language models (LLMs) associate particular traits with men and women? How can we measure these gendered stereotypes across multiple languages? In our latest work, we investigate 16 gendered stereotypes in LLMs in 30 European languages 🧵

Enjoying this excellent writing from Jason Edward Lewis, Hēmi Whaanga and Ceyda Yolgörmez. Paper: Abundant intelligences: placing AI within Indigenous knowledge frameworks, AI & Society, 2024, link.springer.com/article/10.1...
A screenshot of the research paper reading: "AI system designers are building worlds for us to inhabit. In the same way that architects design the physical spaces in which we live, they are designing the virtual systems in which we think. These systems are being increasingly tasked with interactions that have deep social, political, and legal consequences, yet the field seems to continue to fetishize rational goal seeking as the definition of intelligence. The question we ask to start our journey toward abundance is this: do we really want to live in computational worlds incompetent with regard to emotion, sociability, and embodiment?"
