Audiobooks.com is currently running a sale of the audio version of THE TRUTH OF CARCOSA. It's only $4.99 this July! There are no fewer than four high-quality voice artists in this recording and I was really impressed by the detail and effort that went into the production

Cheesy advertising image showing somebody listening to headphones while looking upset (their eye glasses have become yellow). The text reads "The Truth of Carcosa piped directly into your brain for $4.99!?. www.Audiobooks.com"

The cover for THE TRUTH OF CARCOSA is revealed! Fantastic work by @corraldesign.bsky.social. I feel like it conveys things that are key to this novel: its retro SFF aesthetic, metafictional play, and vision of worlds within worlds

Front cover of a novel. The title reads: The truth of carcosa: a novel. The author is Jacob Rollinson. The cover is yellow, with bold red lettering. In the centre is the figure of a figure in a robe and crown, but the face and body of the figure are empty, giving instead a vista of a fantastic landscape

The Room in the Tower

A gothic tale of love, legacy, and possession set in 1920s England. Adapted from E.F. Benson’s short story, this film explores the inheritance of trauma and the terrifying persistence of the past.

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

Over time, a great deal of the pseudo-academic content was edited out, as the horror/thriller elements of the novel took precedence. But the rotten kernel of my novel remains a work of paranoid literary interpretation, so I get excited when people post about The King in Yellow like this

100

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

And that's how the world of my forthcoming novel, THE TRUTH OF CARCOSA was born. My essays became a Special Report by one of the narrators, a despicable individual more than a little like Hildred Castaigne

110

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

I realised that the totalising schema with which I wanted to unite my musings in these essays didn't exist in the real world, or the almost-real world of serious academia. It became necessary to create an alternative reality in which my interpretation of The King in Yellow was supreme

110

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

I contracted COVID. I suffered from long fevers. The world continued to fall into darkness and confusion. More than anything I wanted to understand the connections apparent in the stories in The King in Yellow. I wanted to demonstrate mastery of that field if nothing else

100

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

I was interested in the ways in which "academic" writing can mirror the echoing chambers of an unsound mind. I wrote more essays, about other stories in The King in Yellow. I became entranced by the deployment of signs (literal Yellow Signs) connecting the stories

100

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

I started out by writing an essay about this story. While I was writing, my academic persona morphed into something more paranoid, more prone to digression. I started emulating Hildred Castaigne, narrator of The Repairer of Reputations, a man swimming in a sea of bad affect from without and within

100

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

Without just posting my book deal post yet again, I want to respond in a little more depth to @timclare.bsky.social's insightful thread about The Repairer of Reputations. Back in 2020, when COVID was just hitting, I needed something to focus my attention on. This story, and this book, was that.

100

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

I have very good reasons of my own to reskeet this thread on Robert Chambers' The Repairer of Reputations, my favourite short story in The King in Yellow.

Post announcing a publication deal for the novel The Truth of Carcosa by Jacob Rollinson. A tribute to Robert Chamber's cult horror classic THE KING IN YELLOW, set in a near future dominated by chaos and resurgent nationalism, and following three friends who become entangled in the quest for a mysterious manuscript that appears to summon unholy powers and which unscrupulous corporations are hell-bent on seizing and using for the own ends

062

Jacob Rollinson @jacobrollinson.bsky.social · 14/05/2025

Agree! The Repairer of Reputations is absolutely my favourite story in the collection - and so prescient with its proto-fascist setting

Today, on Shirley Jackson’s birthday, let’s all marvel at one of the greatest opening paragraphs ever written (from THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE)

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met nearly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”
