Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 30/12/2024I would have no concern. Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 23/12/2024We argue that classifying BCI based on their applications e.g. "movement BCI" or "therapeutic BCI" would allow regulators, scientists, physicians, and patients to discuss specific BCI classes narrowly. Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 23/12/2024What is or isn't a "BCI"? We argue in Nature BME today that if the tech stimulates or records brain activity AND does computation, it's a BCI. www.nature.com/articles/s41... Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 26/11/2024I wanted to let the community decide what is a “brain stimulating or recording device” but I think the fact it’s not called a Vagal Brain Stimulator means that most people probably do not consider it a brain stimulating device. I think for most people it has to be direct stimulation or recording. 110
Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 26/11/2024I personally would not categorize VNS is a “device that stimulates the brain”. But if the consensus is that VNS is brain stimulation I expect it could be labeled a BCI. 110
Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 25/11/2024I know this is a departure from traditional nomenclature but we are seeing a growing disconnect between what the public perceives as a BCI and traditional definitions of BCI. I think classifying BCI based on applications help resolves that issue. 110
Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 25/11/2024I would say yes. We have a commentary in press suggesting that we should consider BCI as a "technology that records or stimulates brain activity and that computationally processes it on an electronic device." We go on to suggest that we should categorize BCI based on applications. e.g. Epilepsy BCI 120

Jacob Robinson @jacobrobinson.bsky.social · 25/11/2024Completely agree. I also think there is an opportunity for BCI companies to advance neuroscience because there are questions that are best answered with the scale of data created when technologies are scaled commercially. 130
