#LFF - BEING HEUMANN I’m a sucker for disability representation in film (especially since I am autistic myself), so I was obviously very into this rousing crowdpleaser in which Ruth Madeley is phenomenal as activist Judy Heumann. Bit overlong, but thoroughly loved this.

#LFF - RAY GUNN A new Brad Bird movie is always a delightful occasion, and this is a very fun one! As much a love letter to Bogart-era film noir as it is to retro sci-fi, this is an inventive and visually splendid treat that is, to use an overused pun, out of this world.

#LFF - Wild Horse Nine Martin McDonagh’s most mature film to date is a witty and poignant contemplation of death that we all must face at some point, even on a remote island with giant head statues. Also, this is the most I’ve liked John Malkovich in anything he’s ever done.

#LFF - LA BOLA NEGRA Very apt that this is my first ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ film of the festival - an absolutely gorgeous historical epic that gripped me from the very first scene! It has a style and sense of emotion all its own, which audiences will latch onto as the 2.5hr runtime flies by!

#LFF - ELSINORE The play’s the thing, or at least it is for Andrew Scott’s phenomenal turn as Ian Charleson during his AIDS-ridden performance as Hamlet, which is moving in how understated and surprisingly funny it is in showing how one’s passion for art overcoming everything.

#LFF - WICKER Had a blast with this funny and deeply satisfying fairy tale that boasts some fantastic how-did-they-do-that makeup effects and Olivia Colman being an absolute delight! Not quite as raunchy as the trailers will have you think, though it is still extremely romantic.

The biggest constant is Tom Cruise, who is acting his little heart out in a role he completely disappears into. Of the supporting ensemble cast, Riz Ahmed is a standout - but sadly, the likes of John Goodman and especially Sandra Hüller are largely underutilised.

Got to see #DiggerMovie tonight and… well, it’s something. Lots of big swings taken here, and while it definitely doesn’t hit all of them, the ones that it does are wildly respectable in both their ambition and their bravery. To echo everyone else, it will be very divisive.
