If someone's rpg uses I-Ching or whatever to resolve things? Yes, that's a little pretentious. But so was using uncommon dice sizes once upon a time. If it works and is fun? It'll find an audience. And that's fine. It likely won't be a mega hit and will exclude some gamers. And that's fine.

Of course this idea is bound to everyone realizing they're just games. They aren't a core part of your soul or identity or whatever. Gamer "movement" subcultures are really bad at realizing that. Which is why they're confusing and annoying to people focused on actual problems.

Oh my, SO many annoying angry identity issue laden pissing contests could be avoided if people just adopted this view. We'd also cut support for those who do that stuff or trash on it for their own egos. So it would be a win win.

So that game won't have the wider appeal of more mainstream rpgs. It won't hit with everyone as easily. Yes, it will work very well for people who want a particular experience. And so on. And that's all fine. It's also not inherently better or worse or terrible or brilliant. It's just fine.

I think a lot of the factionalism around "indie" rpg design would go away if everyone involved would just admit that "innovative" design often carries a bit of pretense which will absolutely alienate some gamers who aren't charmed by the game's "big idea" and that's fine.

Hell, Penny Dreadful is in many ways more faithful here than most movies with Dracula in the title. And they changed his name, made him a werewolf for God, and had him hook up with multiple paranormal ladies. But at least a Quincy shaped guy is there.

I get everyone has their things, this is one of mine. And even when we got what I think might be the best Quincy (Billy Campbell in the Coppola version), they still needed to shoehorn in the Mina romance plot to lessen the loss at the end. But at least was a good portrayal.

I want to check out this new Dracula audio drama with a lady Van Helsing but I admit I HATE when adaptations axe Quincy. Symbolically it ruins one of my favorite things about the story: that an Irishman wrote of how Britain cannot be saved without a middle class lady, a cowboy, and a Dutchman.

I'm sometimes tempted to do a show or something where I explain how "terrible and broken" errors and such are actually fine, often explanable, and no big. But I know the trolls would be utterly insufferable.
