Mexico is pushing toward a new law that would enable it to throw out elections compromised by "foreign interference." It's a clear shot at Washington. Sheinbaum has increasingly been pushing back on Trump. But it also could give the ruling party even more power. Free link: nyti.ms/4nJdpMs

The strategy reflects a clear shift in U.S. counterterrorism strategy. The Biden administration identified right-wing extremists like white supremacists as the chief threat. The Trump administration has now largely redirected those resources toward far-left groups like antifa.

Jack Nicas @jacknicas.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
Helping lead the push is Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s counterterrorism adviser. He has pressed to designate more far-left groups abroad as terrorist organizations, to pressure foreign allies to investigate the groups and to search for connections between them and Americans.

Jack Nicas @jacknicas.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
According to State Department documents we reviewed, the U.S. has broadly defined “antifa and far-left terrorism” to include threats from communists, Marxists, anarchists, anticapitalists and those with “eco-extremist” and “other self-identified antifascist ideologies.”
