I think boycott is too strong a word, and I’ve not spoken to a wide enough group of fans to give a holistic answer - but it feels more like sheer disillusionment. Lack of vitality on pitch, a sense of spiral, lack of facilities at the Bessa, hopelessness with ownership - all of it seems to play in.

Broke, bereft, and bottom of the pile. It’s genuinely heartbreaking. Boavista were formed in 1903. They won the league in 2001, becoming just the second side outside Portugal’s Big Three to do so. They reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2003. Run into the ground.

How to kill a Football Club. I was here at the Bessa almost a year ago to the day to watch Boavista snarl and scrap their way to a 1-1 draw with Porto in the Derby in front of nearly 15000. A year on they’re currently bottom of the Primeira, down a man and a goal to Arouca in front of about 2k.
