At the end of July, our conservation volunteers alongside the young people in our Eco-Explorers summer camp helped @londonhogwatch.bsky.social deploy cameras as part of the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme on Barnes Common.

Come and explore the Leg o'Mutton, this fantastic small nature reserve on a morning walk on Tuesday 2nd June, led by Veronica Schroter, local resident and Leg o'Mutton committee member. This old Victorian reservoir by the Thames was decommissioned over 60 years ago.

You've probably seen our big green tractor on the Common recently, mowing our grassland areas. Every year we mow areas on Maisie’s meadow, Rocks Lane, Van Buren’s, Half and Half, The Orchard and Red Rover.

Our Senior Conservation Officer, Will Scott-Mends showed us the bat boxes on the site using a non-intrusive red light, and he told us all about the extraordinary lives of our bats. We also heard the loud chorus of Marsh frogs, and even a Tawny Owl chick calling for dinner.

Thank you to everyone who came to our June bat walk at the Leg o’Mutton nature reserve recently. Due to the warm weather, we saw and heard many bats on our detectors, including Pipistrelle and Soprano Pipistrelle bats.

Thanks to the young people and their parents/carers who joined our Eco-Explorers Bats and Moths workshop last week, we saw and heard lots of bats on Barnes Common! There weren’t too many moths in our trap, but we did catch and inspect some nocturnal beetles and other insects... 1/n
