A late decision to go for the Semi-p at Pennington this morning nearly thwarted by rain, forgetting scope and the bird moving lagoons but persevering paid off and the Little Stint too. No photos for Nick @lytchettbirder.bsky.social but had worse days

Painted Ladies are gathering along the Dorset coast today, having vanished from my garden a few weeks ago. They will head south to France at altitude, probably waiting for favourable winds that are due tomorrow @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Waiting to go out on a BoPH bird boat when the Barfleur sailed out in the mist on one of its very last trips over to Cherbourg from Poole.

Heard a distress call and couldn’t see anything at first it was from behind a now dry water butt. It turned out to be a frog half swallowed by a grass snake, which is a first for the garden, unfortunately for the snake but lucky for the frog as both bolted in opposite directions.

Please don’t put out hair for bird nests. Chicks get entangled in hair balls. Just had to cut hair strands that were tying 3 blue tit chicks together, and wrapped round the throat of one skinny chick that couldn’t swallow food. Hopefully saved in time 🤞

It’s a hard decision, for me the walk to see the Bluethroat is a major feat. I can’t get my scooter past the gate halfway down but I do want to see that bird even though I’ve seen many in my birding life, but there are birds that always pull you to them.

It’s a useful guide and does help you with maps etc and provides a lot of information but you must be keen to get a lot out of it. But for example Lesser Butterfly Orchid does not give you specific places due to its rarity
