Book 91 of 2026: @manylittlewords.bsky.social, The Folly A woman and her ex-con father become caretakers of a remote seaside tower in Cornwall, where they encounter a man who speaks with the protagonist's dead mother's voice. A short read that is exquisitely uncanny and rich with Gothic atmosphere.

Book 90 of 2026: @angelaslatter.bsky.social, Fitcher's Bird Short, but very good! If you're only familiar with her work from the Sourdough novels and stories, you may be unprepared for the brutality of this fairytale-infused novella about a serial killer preying on three sisters.

Book 89 of 2026: Elizabeth Dearnley (ed.), Haunted Yorkshire All of these British Library collections are top-notch, but I love Yorkshire and I love ghosts, so this was a particularly fun one for me. Perfect for October, too.

Not to alarm anyone, but I wrote a 4000+ word chapter today that *might* be the start of a sequel to Ornamental Women. If you liked the dirtbag heroines of the first novel, you're gonna love/hate a character you meet in this one: she's an absolute psychopath who makes Cassie look well adjusted.

Exorcism's Daughter aka The House of Insane Women: a liberal-minded young doctor takes over an abusive asylum and institutes a program of humane treatment--but, to be honest, it really feels like he *also* does the women under his care some pretty severe disservices!

Book 88 of 2026: @sjshank.bsky.social, Our Lady of Holy Slaughter German crusaders, their native guides, and a papal knight flee from their pagan enemies after a calamitous rout. This is a grimdark survival horror novel with touches of folk horror--and I highly recommend it!

Scenes from the weekend. We went to the Grain Bin vintage and antique market, got great Mexican for lunch, hit up a library book sale, then went to the pumpkin stand.

Book 87 of 2026: Vernon Lee's The Virgin of the Seven Daggers Reading this collection was a reminder that Vernon Lee ranks second in my personal pantheon of Victorian Gothic writers, with only Poe ahead in the short story arena. Decadent and deeply psychological, she wrote with uncommon depth.

Tonight I turned out the lights, lit a candle, and settled in to watch Sister Death. There's nothing really showy or pulse-pounding about it, but it is beautifully filmed and feels like one of the few Catholic horror movies that's actually about Catholicism.

Book 86 of 2026: The Last Day of H. P. Lovecraft As he dies, Lovecraft receives a few strange visitors and is forced to reckon with his life, his prejudices, and the possibility of his legacy. Way better than Moore's Providence, if that means anything to you.

Man, Vernon Lee's "Amour Dure" is an unsung Christmas horror story. It's got everything you might want: fin de siecle atmosphere, ghostly visitations, the dark and violent history of Italy, seduction from beyond the grave...

You know you're in for something different from Hammer when the first ten minutes pass without any dialog. Something's rotten at the local nobleman's estate: between the daughter who runs away to hook up with a medical student and the weird invalid son, it's a real family affair.

Strange Voyage: Not much of a voyage, but it is plenty strange. A womanizing musician is entwined with a fading crackpot aristocratic family in Spain. This is a tragicomic Gothic with a body count. Also features some truly rockin' accordion playing and dancing the twist.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow: this made-for-tv horror movie from the early 80s is a doozy. A mentally handicapped man is mistakenly blamed for the death of a child, hunted down by some bloodthirsty good 'ol boys, and killed. But things don't rest there--one by one, the hunters become the hunted.

Book 84 of 2026: Fred Noland, Our Little Wild Time Our Little Wild Time is a collection of comics from indie zines. They vary in story and characters--from Eurotrash Gone Wild to Southern Gothic tale of life on the skids--but there is a unifying grimy manic-ness that provides the throughline.

Book 83 of 2026: Be Not Afraid Be Not Afraid is a Southern Gothic nightmare that tells the tragic tale of a corrupt(ing) man born of the nephilim; this comic reminded me quite a bit--in terms of art style and theme--of the old Hellraiser comics published on the Epic imprint.

Book 82 of 2026: Peter Saxon, The Darkest Night A British chap in India just wants to build a dam, but the spirit of a tyrannical maharaja and his ding-dang Kali cult keeps getting in the way! This book certainly has some *ideas*:

Book 81 of 2026: @isabelalivino.bsky.social, An Immaculate Deception An amazing roller coaster of a novel! A Gothic premise veers into occult territory, takes a detour into Norman Bates-land, then the twist turns the whole thing into a late-season soap opera, but I mean that in a positive way.

Book 80 of 2026: @lesliejanderson.bsky.social, The Unmothers A journalist is sent to investigate the story of a horse that supposedly gave birth to a human child, but so much more than that is going on. This is a great, unique folk horror novel that charts its own course. Highly recommended!

Books 77-79 of 2026: L. Wyatt, Edgar Switchblade series A pious psychopath gallops around the Wicked West, encountering demons, werewolves, wendigos, zombies, witches, and...worse yet...Puritans. These definitely have a "bizarro" flavor, which means they are a) gross and b) things just happen.

First movie of the weekend: Happy Hell Night A frat initiation goes horribly wrong when it releases a demon priest from confinement in an asylum. Guess what? He starts murdering co-eds. The killer in this Canadian-Yugoslavian slasher is admittedly pretty freaky, especially his voice.

It's interesting that those "Gothic Marxism" books (which are near universally terrible) don't really address Blood for Dracula, a film with explicitly socialist themes. Then again, there's no way to make the film's depiction of a sexually predatory socialist flatter anyone's politics so...

Book 76 of 2026: Asha Greyling, The Harrowing Archibald Lee Asha Greyling's second outing in vampire-infused nineteenth-century America is a delight. Our Indian lawyer protagonist has reason to believe that her Poe-like client was not a suicide, leading her back into the murky world of the undead.
