An unfortunate statistic for those insisting food prices are going up: they have consistently been falling as a percentage of income, with rises mainly coming from eating out. You can have your avocado toast; just cook it yourself, you lazy bums.

A graph showing total food spending as a percentage of income, the trend is strongly decreasing (15% to 10%) from 1960 to 2004, at which point it levels off and slightly increases to 11%. It is further broken down into spending on food at home, which only decreases, and spending on eating out, which only increases.

Incredible. This planning reform nonsense seems to simply be a smoke screen to avoid the reality that we need more social housing.

Between 2013 and 2023, London’s population grew by 6%. The number of homes grew by 11% in the same period. And yet, rents went up by 33%. And house prices are up by nearly 65%. So, we’re building faster than the population is growing, and homes are still getting further out of reach.
