Managed to do a bios update and then CPU and cooler upgrade without breaking the motherboard or anything else and that's pretty impressive if you ask me

People who want to stop giving 1Password your money: what are you using instead? I use it as a basic vault and not much more.

I remember a conference after party a decade+ ago where @johnresig.com was stood in the corner on his own because everyone (including me) was too shy to speak to him. Fwiw, if you ever want to talk to me at one of these things, please just do it. I'm also shy.

Oh cool! That has tempted me from the size and how much you can fit in. One day I'll try an N layout but I've just got so many OO locos now 😁

Normally my source is various brands of secondhand trains! I'm OO gauge but have some HO from my purchases in Munich when I travel for work!

Yes parenting is hard but the good news is that my coping mechanism is buying too many model trains

For me it's Transport Fever 3 at end of September that is tempting me for some OOO and I've already blocked a few evenings out after work 😂

ah man that is so tough; I know exactly what that is like ❤️

If you want to know what parenting is like (for me at least) things got so tough yesterday that after failing to get my 2yr old to eat his pasta in a pub (meal with family), I had to walk out & have a cry in the car park. Sharing because no one talks about this stuff - especially not dads.

I can't put my finger exactly on it but Opus 5 and the new GPT 5.6 are just...too smart? Constantly giving dreadful verbose, unclear output and actually far far worse at generating anything useful.

This is really interesting thank you! I'm consistently seeing things where I think "thank goodness I could correct that" so maybe that's what I need to start pushing into the harness to be proactively checked.

I find this really interesting because my experience is that I have to work hard to ensure AI produces a PR of sufficient quality with a lot of rounds of feedback and I'm not sure if it's better to have this loop and do that all in your testing/review stage or to do it as you build

Yep. If code was never the hard part, software wouldn’t be so goddamn buggy and broken. If “code” only ever meant thoughtlessly churning out the next endpoint, you missed the point entirely. blog.senko.net/code-was-nev...

Technology, like time, cannot be stopped in it's relentless march forward. Much as us old timers would like to slow down one or the other just a little bit… In light of that, Chrome 153 will come with an updated list of modern devices for emulation mode—with nice categorisation—thanks to @jackf.io
An updated list of modern devices DevTools can emulate now nicely categorised into Mobile, Foldables, Tablets & Desktops, and Smart Displays.

cool use case of chatgpt work i heard last night:
connect your family calendars and explain your kids' interests.
every morning for the drive to school, have it make a podcast that talks about one kid's soccer game that afternoon, one kid's upcoming birthday, some news, etc.

similar but different: this is why I've been enjoying finally getting my model railways hobby underway; learning to solder, wiring it up, etc, has some surprisingly complex challenges and it's so nice to be away from tech and AI and all that for a bit

In my audits, reading the Performance profile is where people get stuck: the flame chart and waterfall look like noise at first I built an interactive guide to make them click, every figure is interactive, plus LCP, CLS, INP and the Insights panel perf.reviews/profile-guide #WebPerf #DevTools

But the days of nitpicking on small syntax or carefully looking for perf regressions etc are definitely numbered. If I controlled this I'd probably have an AI rate a PR for risk and experiment with low risk PRs being AI only reviewed.

Jack Franklin @jackf.io · 25/07/2026
I agree with this to some extent and on some percentage of PRs this is definitely true, but there are some times when I'm glad I could feedback architecture wise on a system that I know inside out and want to keep it a certain way for legitimate reasons

Asked AI on a whim to see if it could identify any reasons my unit tests felt a bit slow and sure enough - runner.test.ts: ~9.3s cumulative → ~0.15s. - All reported test durations: ~27.9s → ~8.3s.

Yup fucking nightmare. Don't mind losing but we absolutely threw that one away. We were 1-0 up and they created nothing and we've retreated to our box and let Messi have time and space. Fucking madness on so many levels. That was our game to win.

(context is important here, obviously we all have vibe coded side projects or prototypes where this isn't important) but for "proper" work, my barrier is "this CL is just like how I would have manually done it and I have the same level of understanding"

Jack Franklin @jackf.io · 15/07/2026
A colleague asked me if a change I sent for review was "you, or AI" and I was very happy because whilst I used AI to help me debug, plan and impl, I worked hard to make sure I understood the change deeply and got it authored exactly how I want (via prompt + manual tweaks). This is the goal, folks.

Omg love this quote and can't help think the same about how wild it is that a few companies now hold the industry hostage at whatever rates they want (And how much this potentially screws over folks/companies unable to afford it)

Apparently Spotify ship about 2000 AI changes a day or something yet they still can't make your downloaded content appear immediately if you're on very poor signal

Jack Franklin @jackf.io · 10/07/2026
I think context on what people are doing is important here, because yes I've had 4-5 explorations going at once but in that case I care less about the absolute quality of the result. But landing huge amounts of changes into production is where I'm less confident about the quality+long term inpact

Jack Franklin @jackf.io · 10/07/2026
All these products that let you run a fleet of AI agents and do 100 things at once are baffling to me; do we actually want this?! I know I can't do more than 1-2 things (with one primary focus) before the quality drops and my head can't keep up and think properly about the problem and solution.
