And when the images on such books were genuinely bizarre, it was at least authentically charming, because you knew a bemused artist had done their best to fulfill a weird request. For example:

$The cover of the Guy N. Smith novel Crabs: The Human Sacrifice, featuring a very detailed picture of a gigantic crab brandishing a large knife (that is still a fraction of the size of its enormous claw), preparing to use said knife to sacrifice a woman laying on some kind of altar. That description is quite dry and to the point, but I can't emphasize enough how fundamentally weird this image is. And it's made all the better because someone actually painted this picture by hand at some point.$
