Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I hated sitting through it the first time, (midnight showing at the Waverly in Greenwich Village, I think — the place right outside the W 4 St. station). But it got to me, and I love it. 010

Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I see frontier AIs as analogous to mainframes: at risk of being destroyed from below by open weight models. The technology is very new. Advances in training and inference, and hardware will make small local LLMs all that most people will need. It is in NVidia’s interest to push this trend. 001

Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Ahh, I see, thanks. Doesn’t hosting your own VPN give up its main advantage, at least as far as torrenting is concerned? 100
Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I got a letter from my ISP pointing out consequences if I persisted. (Pulling my Internet access would leave me high and dry.) They care only because the copyright holder does. I still don’t see how you were noticed if you were going through a VPN. This hassling must involve the VPNs cooperation. 100
Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Dinged even though the week-long download was on the VPN?! Were you caught by your ISP or the copyright holder? How did they figure it out? 100

Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 10/08/2026@raistlin71.bsky.social Saw your post about torrenting. I’m also fed up with “legal” sources of media. What is your advice on how to torrent safely? I’ve tried in the past and gotten dinged by my ISP. Is a VPN sufficient protection? 110

Tad Askew @jack0renstein.bsky.social · 02/08/2026I visited Wales specifically to visit Portmeirion, where The Prisoner was filmed. It is really odd. And, of course, it was built by an eccentric British aristocrat/amateur architect, whose favored outfit included britches and long yellow socks. There’s a documentary on him, on repeat. 160
