🧵 New preprint: Have you ever tried to perform molecular clock dating of ancient mitogenomes using BEAST? Have you struggled using manual tools to create your input files, run your analyses and extract your results? We hope our pipeline provides a solution to this: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

MitoDate: a Nextflow pipeline for molecular clock dating and phylogenetic inference using ancient mitogenomes
Summary Ancient DNA studies are increasingly targeting samples that are beyond the limit of radiocarbon dating (>50 thousand years old) and are often difficult or impossible to date using other geochr...

125 thousands years ago, a relative of mammoths🦣 and elephants🐘 roamed near a lake in Germany and was hunted down by Neanderthals. Today, P. antiquus tusks inform on its diet and ecology🍀: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Life histories of straight-tusked elephants from the Last Interglacial Neanderthal site of Neumark-Nord (~125 ka)
Isotopes and proteomics reveal the mobility, diet, and sex of straight-tusked elephants hunted by Neanderthals at Neumark-Nord.

science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aea6774 Excess of Sapiens (S) regions in Neanderthal (N) chromosome X indicate a preference in ♂N - ♀S in their ancient admixture. Beatiful paper. This would also explain, a lot, the S mtDNA substitution of original N mtDNA in Neanderthal (my personal consideration).

Interbreeding between Neanderthals and modern humans was strongly sex biased
Sex biases in admixture and other demographic processes are recurrent features throughout human evolution. For admixture between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans (AMHs), sex bias has been p...

Four months ago, I published my first #ancientDNA paper about #Sicily. I really want everyone to understand what we discovered, so I also made this divulgative article to explain our main findings: g-villani.github.io/giacomovilla... Feel free to check! 😊

After a week of intense population genomics, lots of tired but still smiley faces. Thank you @embo.org for funding another edition of our Population Genomics course in Naples. And thank you to the trainers and participants for making this eight edition another success! #EMBOpopgen
