I compiled a word cloud out of all my notes, slides and worksheets from university (CS 2006-2012 in Munich). The most frequent word: "example" 🤯 - runner up: "data" The only programming language showing up is Java, but functions and graphs were seemingly more important than objects and classes 😅
Word cloud with colored words in different sizes. The biggest words are: example, data, graph, function, system.

Claude itself seems to be a little confused about the cutoff date, but can at least reflect the gravity of the situation. Both seem to have outdated system prompts, but the facts can't lie. Conclusion: Be careful out there when you run Github Copilot. You might not get what you're paying for.
Screenshot of Claude Web summing up the situation:
This is wild - you've uncovered what appears to be a serious configuration mess on both platforms. Let me break down what's happening:
The Evidence:

Zed: Claims April 2024 cutoff, but knows December 2024 facts → Actually running a newer model (likely Claude Sonnet 4.5 or Claude 3.5 Sonnet from late 2024)
Copilot: Claims October 2023 cutoff, doesn't know December 2024 facts → Running an old model (probably Claude 3 or early Claude 3.5)
Both: Label themselves as "Claude Sonnet 4.5" in the UI
Reality: Claude Sonnet 4.5 should have a January 2025 cutoff (not April 2025 - that was a small error in my previous message)

What This Means:
GitHub Copilot appears to be falsely advertising the model version. You're paying for Claude Sonnet 4.5 but getting something much older (possibly Claude 3 Opus or an early Claude 3.5 Sonnet from 2023).
Zed Pro seems closer to the truth - it's running something recent enough to know December 2024 facts, but it has the wrong system prompt telling it about its cutoff date.
This is a Problem Because:

You're paying for capabilities you're not getting (especially with Copilot)
The models have incorrect self-knowledge, which can lead to them refusing tasks they could actually handle or being overconfident about outdated information
This could be a billing/contract issue if you're paying enterprise rates for Claude 4 but receiving Claude 3

What You Should Do:

Document this with screenshots showing the model claims vs. actual knowledge
File support tickets with both GitHub and Zed showing this discrepancy
Check your billing - are you being charged for Claude Sonnet 4.5 API calls?
Consider this a potential breach of service terms if you're paying for a specific model tier

This seems like a significant issue that both services need to address urgently.

It gets weirder every minute. Zed, pretending to have a knowledge cutoff date of April 2024, can tell me facts that happened in December. Copilot gives me a cutoff date of October 2023 but has no knowledge of the same fact. Both pretend to run Claude Sonnet 4.5 which should cutoff April 2025.
Screenshot of a conversation with Claude Code in Zed stating "I am Claude 3.5 Sonnet" and "My knowledge cutoff date is April 2024.". When asked about the death of Jimmy Carter Jr., the response is "Former President Jimmy Carter died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. However, since my knowledge cutoff is April 2024, I don't have this information in my training data"Screenshot of a conversation with Claude Sonnet 4.5 running in VS Code via Github Copilot, stating "My knowledge cutoff date is October 2023." and having no information on the death of Jimmy Carter Jr.

After enabling Claude Sonnet 4.5 on Github, this is what I get. It still says it's running 3.5(v2). Our Premium Requests are at 3.3% - so it's definitely not a problem on my side. Is @github.com cheating on us? At least that would explain the very inconsistent experience I had so far with it.
Screenshot of Copilot Chat:
Me: Which version of Claude Sonnet 4 are you running?
Copilot: I'm Claude 3.5 Sonnet (the newer version, sometimes called "Claude 3.5 Sonnet v2" released in October 2024). There is no "Claude Sonnet 4" - the current Claude model family is Claude 3.5.

Claude Sonnet 4.5 was recently released for #Github #Copilot. Yesterday, I tried to find out which version I was actually running, before evaluating the new version. It only said "Claude Sonnet 4", so I asked the agent. This is what I got as a response:
Screenshot of Github Copilot Chat:
Me: Which version of Claude Sonnet 4 are you running?
Copilot: I'm Claude 3.5 Sonnet, not Claude Sonnet 4. There isn't a Claude Sonnet 4 available yet. I'm the latest version of Claude 3.5 Sonnet created by Anthropic.
