Terrific 2-page history of #antitrust including details on steel, farmers, and unions Wu&Khan skip, iirc. Note getting the law in place was not enough, it took another crisis and election to get it enforced and fixed. Cc @helenamalikova

Technology and the Rise of Antitrust
Because antitrust law is confusing—some would say contused-it
is helpful to look at the history of antitrust and the evolution of key prin-
ciples. From the beginning, antitrust was intimately connected with new
technology-in particular, new technology that exhibited economies of
scale. The last quarter of the nineteenth century witnessed a wave of new
large-scale technologies. In chapter 3 we saw how the Bessemer process
revolutionized steel production, slashing the price of steel rails. With cheap
rails and new railroad technology, railroads experlenced an investment
boom. Increasingly, with lower transportation costs, the market for farm
Produce grew and farmers turned to commercial agriculture. Other tech-
nologies similarly changed petroleum refining, sugar refining, meat produc-
tion, farm machinery, and other industries with substantial scale economies.
New technologies used by a small number of large firms brought lower
prices and new opportunities in many industries, but with that they also
gave those large firms, called trusts, significant power over people's lives.
Railroads gave farmers new opportunities in commercial agriculture, but
they also meant that farmers became dependent on railroads. In many rural
regions, only a single railroad was economically feasible, so local mo-
nopolies tended to emerge. Although railroads initially provided lower
transportation costs, they also had the power to raise prices, which they
used, squeezing the farmers.
The power and unfairness of the railroads became a major issue for the
populist movement. The public's deep outrage led to the Interstate Com-
merce Act of 1887, which regulated railroad rates, and the Sherman Antitrust
Act of 1890. This was the first federal legislation covering competition, but
it faced significant dificulties in the courts. Indeed, during the first decade
of the Sherman Act, there were no successful prosecutions of large compa-
nies. Instead, the Sherman Act was used against labor unions.

PLATFORMS AND ANTITRUST 147
But during the first decade of the twentieth century, public outrage
deepened further, fanned by so-called muckraking journalists who exposed
corruption in government, unfair behavior of large corporations, and other
social ills, such as lynching, sexual harassment, and the treatment of the
mentally ill. The muckrakers exposed company use of child labor and the
oppression of unions. Upton Sinclair's book The Jungle bared the unhealthy
practices of meat packers and other food companies; Justice Brandeis wrote
about how banks promoted the consolidation of industries in a few hands;
Samuel Hopkins Adams revealed the false claims made by pharmaceutical
companies; Ida Tarbell vividly painted the details of how Standard Oil
extorted its way to become the largest oil refiner in the world.
President Theodore Roosevelt picked up on this broad discontent, mak-
ing trust-busting part of his Square Deal. Under Roosevelt, the United
States initiated a lawsuit against Standard Oil for Sherman Act violations,
winning a victory in 1911 that led to the dissolution of the company. That
victory marked the real start of antitrust enforcement in the United States.
In 1914, recognizing the weakness of the Sherman Act, Congress passed
the Clayton Antitrust Act, which significantly strengthened antitrust en-
forcement powers and detailed various forms of illegal conduct.

condemnation of men. But it was also the first step toward eradicating the ideological division of men and women along lines of sex—for her, the ultimate end of feminist revolution. "A society in which women are subjectively and objectively the genuine equals of men... will necessarily be an androgynous society." She did not value separatism, the aggressive policing of the boundaries of who was or was not a woman, what was or was not beautiful. She valued the blatant disorganization of gender

Introduction
Only rarely does it appear as she had imagined it would
in her journal, in the gruesome forms of rape and murder
and slavery. (A tantalizing journal entry contains notes
for an essay she never wrote that she wanted to call "On
Women Dying" or "How Women Die.") Sometimes, as in
"The Third World of Women," her extraordinary 1972 in-
terview with the leftist quarterly Libre, death was the will
to self-annihilation of the entire global order, whose ide-
ology of unlimited growth went hand in hand with "ever-
increasing levels of productivity and consumption; the
unlimited cannibalization of the environment." Women
and men alike were ensnared by this naked, howling de-
sire to accumulate more and more and more, but women
were additionally oppressed by the institution of the nu-
clear family, "a prison of sexual repression, a playing field
of inconsistent moral laxity, a museum of possessiveness,
a guilt-producing factory, and a school of selfishness."
The fact that the family was also the source of apparently
unalienated values ("warmth, trust, dialogue, uncompet-
itiveness, loyalty, spontanety, sexual pleasure, fun") only
increased its power.
In articulating this double diagnosis, Sontag was care-
ful to distance herself from the rhetoric of the socialist or

“We were horrified to hear that concentration camps were being set up in the middle of peacetime, and secret cells where innocent people were murdered without the formality of a trial had been built in the barracks.” WHERE IS OUR HORROR THAT THE US IS DOING […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

INCIPIT HITLER
Reich would of course divest himself of the vulgarities of an
anti-Semitic agitator. After all, what violent actions could he
carry out in a state where the law was firmly established, the
Parliamentary majority was against him, and every citizen was
assured of his liberty and equal rights by the solemn wording
of the constitution?
Then came the Reichstag fire, parliament vanished from
the scene, Goering let his wolf pack off the leash, and all at
once the rule of law in Germany was over. We were horrified to
hear that concentration camps were being set up in the middle
of peacetime, and secret cells where innocent people were
murdered without the formality of a trial had been built in the
barracks. This could only be an initial outburst of senseless rage
as the new regime took power, we told ourselves, such things
cannot last long in the twentieth century. But it was only the
beginning: The world began to pay attention, and at first would
not believe anything so incredible. However, it was in those
days that I saw the first refugees arriving in Austria. They had
climbed over the Salzburg mountains by night, or swum the
river marking the border. Starving, ragged and distressed, they
stared at us, and with them a panic flight from inhumanity had
begun. Refugees were to spread over the whole earth. But still
I did not guess, when I saw these exiles, that their pale faces
heralded my own fate, and we would all be victims of this one
man's raging lust for power.

I’ve wondered for some time what is up with Putin both imitating and vilifying the Nazis, then yesterday reading Zweig I realised the imitation was personal, not national. Be so dispicable all your secret backers assume you can’t have many others. Now today […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Even when he had become Chancellor on that January day in
1933, the vast majority, including some who had helped him to
rise to that position, still thought that he was just a stopgap and
National Socialism would be only a transient episode.
It was now that Hitler's cynically brilliant technique first
revealed itself on the grand scale. He had been making promises
to all and sundry for years, and gained important supporters
in all the political parties, each of whom thought that he could
exploit the mysterious powers of this 'unknown soldier' for
his own ends. But the same technique that Hitler later used in
387Next page lists many sundry groups and individuals expecting to benefit , even the SDP, and he says the Jews expected him to drop the antisemitic pr now he was in power.
