It's not about one genre being better than the other. There's good and bad in every genre. It's about personal creative bests, no matter what you're doing as an artist. These are the universal truths I've always been pursuing. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

As much as I work on this stuff, I don't consider myself a critic. Making music is like cooking. I'm a chef, just in the kitchen cooking. The people who are just in their bag doing their thing aren't the best judges. They just do the work. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Once your audience thinks they know who you are, you're in a box. Keep growing, or serve your fans? That's a false duality. Play the classics the way they wanna hear them, then another part of the set where you play around with the deep cuts. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

On stage, who are you gonna focus on? The people in the front paying attention, not the ones in the back on their phones. It shifted my mindset from "I'm awesome" to "let's see who I'm connecting with, and then try to connect with them more." @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

To be of interest as an artist, you have to have an interesting journey. Something to sing about. We like our heroes to overcome difficulties and struggle. A guy everything has gone well for his whole life — that's the most boring movie ever. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

I'll hire an engineer, an arranger. I delegate as much as possible — that way I keep the ship on course. I can do those jobs. But if I get into those weeds, I might miss something else. Then I can come in and be that fresh voice. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

You're taught in the studio to never have stars in your eyes. Some artists want you to be a little bit of a fan. Some get turned off by any sort of accolade. So you learn the client. But we're trained just to treat people like human beings. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

It comes down to what makes you different from everybody else. It's already in there. It's a matter of framing it, coaxing it out, shining a certain light on it. That's what people love about their favorite artists. Like a flavor of ice cream. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

I always do my own projects on the side. Aerosol is the current one. It's important that I don't get my ya-yas off with my clients' projects. I wanna be a clean slate for them — reflect them, show up for them. Not "and you're my next guinea pig." @brendandekora

We'll have shared playlists and talk about movies. It becomes self-evident what's on the artist's mind. A great record is authentic to where they are right now. If they want an all-happy album but they're in a deep, dark depression, something won't be genuine. @brendandekora

A choice of guitar tones, all great, all different. How do we know which is right? Maybe you've got a buddy who makes an amp, and now you're helping each other. Suddenly the tone has a narrative. It reinforces what you represent. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Security is where everything has a predictable outcome. Creativity is everything security is not. So you build the room. Anyone can make a fool of themselves — we might laugh and point, but we love you. Fear never leads to the best decisions. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The first thing I do in any session — even one I've been working on a while — is sit with a pad and listen down once or twice without stopping. That's when your ears are freshest, and you react purely. After that, the session is just the list. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The connection between an artist and their listeners is that sense of: this person speaks for me. They know me. They see me — because they're speaking from my point of view. I swear that's more important than production style or performance ability or craft.

J-Hi @j-hi.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
There's a sense of duty. Maybe that comes from my stoic readings. You take the artist's path because you need to. Because that's who you are. Because if not, you'd run into traffic. Then the duty extends to being a voice for those who'll never put their feelings into art.

Most artists feel things a little more deeply. What makes someone need a medium, rather than just talking, is being moved in a way words can't reach. Especially when the world is a dumpster fire and this isn't the timeline we wanted. That's grist for the mill.

Some people know their stuff. A lot are spouting nonsense that isn't based on anything. That's the internet in general, isn't it. You have to vet your sources, and be good at critical thinking yourself — frankly a rare trait. We make mistakes there too.

There's a book called Thinking, Fast and Slow. Fast thinking is knee-jerk thinking. Our business is technical and hard to navigate. So you get shortcuts. Follow my ten steps. Sign up for my program. My own weakness is I can't stop trying to break up the sale of the snake oil.

There's always going to be suckers. There's always going to be people trying to avoid the actual work — and people wanting to make money off offering these things. Maybe it's a fool's errand to try to do anything about it. But anyway. That's my deal.

Once I was an auto mechanic for a summer. Strip a bolt and you're in for an afternoon of pain. Then I worked in an actual shop. They stripped bolts too — they just had plan B already ready. It's easy when everything's going right. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Rick Rubin has a line: any given day is like a journal entry. It's for you, for that day, and that's it. Your best work doesn't come from watching what everyone else is doing. That's not where the answers are. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The artist who matters says the thing the audience felt but couldn't put into words. Not expressing yourself — expressing something already in the listener. The right artist makes a shared feeling public. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The best vocal takes I've captured share one thing: the singer stopped thinking about the mic. Performing for the recording is still controlled. The takes that matter happen when you're singing to something real. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Write 100 songs. Ten will be worth something. That's not discouraging — that's the process. You don't get to identify the 10 before you write the 100. Keep making regardless of outcome. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Most artists I respect make music the way they always have, regardless of whether it's working. Not stubbornness — they won't trade the thing that lets them think for a better algorithm. Self-therapy is the only strategy that lasts. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Most people think confidence is believing your work is good. It isn't. It's not needing anybody to tell you. Get this thing, then you'll be happy. Land this project, then you're doing the right thing. That's where the years go. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The sessions where someone got something extraordinary look the same from outside: they stopped trying. Not 'gave up' — 'got out of the way.' You can't plan your way there. But you can stop blocking it. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

There's a reason the guitar solo hits the same way every time — your brain predicted it, and being right feels good. This isn't against originality. If nothing is predictable, nothing lands. Surprise needs expectation first. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Almost every significant innovation in music came from someone who didn't belong in that genre. Jazz to rock to hip-hop to EDM — outsiders every time. Coming from somewhere else is what lets you see what insiders can't. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Musicians have always been servants — even Bach worked for kings. Then came the cult of personality, and things got topsy-turvy. The crowd doesn't come to watch you perform for yourself. They come because you're performing for them. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Major labels have leaned on social media data to dictate signings. It's not working — that's not how you develop artists. What's replacing it: real time with an artist, figuring out what they're about. I did it because it was right, not trending. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Seth Godin's been saying this for 20 years and the industry still doesn't get it: marketing isn't logistics. You break through by telling a story someone needed to hear — not by posting more. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Nobody discovers music in a vacuum — they discover it because someone they trusted told them to. The track that blew up won by trust, not superiority. Quality is the floor, not the ceiling. Context is the mechanism. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Wesley Willis had a sound so unmistakable you'd know it was his before anyone told you — that's real originality. My own way in was just as unlikely: classical-kid, non-metal guy who ended up staff-engineering for Slayer, Danzig, Rick Rubin. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

I was the eclectic outsider — in metal, that meant I didn't get first dibs. A handful of "safe" names absorb all the work, because hiring them means nobody's blamed if a record flops. Not just metal — every scene gatekeeps this way. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

I came up through Chopin and church music before I ever heard a synthesizer — an ear for structure and harmony from years at a piano, not music school. That's a different foundation than starting with a drum machine. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The glass partition gave engineers control. It also made them observers instead of participants. When you're in the room, breathing the same air, you catch things the recording can't describe. A look. The moment before a take. Be in the room. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

The record doesn't have to be bad to get passed on. It just has to be hard to explain. A&R is a fear business. The ones who get through aren't the safest — they made something undeniable enough to push past the fear. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

I've watched engineers spend 20 hours mixing a song that didn't need mixing. It needed a better song. The technical stuff matters least — the feeling has to be there, in the writing and performance. You can't mix something into a good song. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Every few years there's a sound that takes over. Producers study it, sample it, replicate it. Then it's gone. Trends work like fashion — by the time you've learned it, the people who set it have moved on. The only thing that doesn't expire is knowing who you are. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel

Every producer has a sound. The ones who last know when to turn it off. I can hear myself in a lot of records. That's not something I'm always proud of. The job is to make the artist sound like the best version of themselves — not like you. @reinishimoto1 @tfwordschannel
