I thought maybe Scratch would be a good way to teach web app building / HTML, and five minutes later (after pasting a google AI result Into @vibes.diy) the 1-shot result is already interesting: vibes.diy/vibe/jchris/...

That position is an extreme form of epiphenomenalism, because it argues that qualia are epiphenomenal by necessity, not just as a contingent fact about our universe.
020
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
So there is “logical“ room for the epiphenomenalist here, i’m just not interested in that horn of the dilemma.
210
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
As far as I can tell, the argument requires you to either hold that first-person qualia are necessarily epiphenomenal, or that “Turing qualia” is a distinct concept from first-person qualia. I have no rebuttal for those who think that our qualia have no effects, other than common sense.

If we imagine the switches are played by human actors then we can see how their suffering would be amplified if they knew the system they were implementing was the torment Nexus instead of something pleasant. Having no agency is worse if you disagree with what you’re tasked with.
010
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
Do you understand how my argument is that the definition of Turing qualia must be about something that is different from what we mean when we talk about the qualia we experience in the first person? Which calls into question its conceptual integrity. Probably a better word for it would be tendency.
110
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
It might be that the silicone components of the switches are suffering, but that suffering is not dependent on whether they implement a chat bot or a video game or a payroll system.

Emergentists about software qualia have to contend with the problem that what they are conjecturing can only exist in the logical realm, and cannot properly be an aggregate of aspects of the substrate.
010
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
My intuition says that at the Software level there is no way for the physical qualia in various micro components of the computer to coordinate with each other. They have been walled off.
110
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
Human minds can also famously be paused, resumed, and migrated to other substrates without interruption.
140
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
However, I don’t think my argument is stated as clearly as it could be. It would be great if it could be so simple as to be undeniable by anyone who accepts basic logic. We need it to become conventional wisdom among thinking people before it ever becomes a live topic in a government hearing.
210
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
I don’t have a good rebuttal to the pure epiphenomenalist, and I’m OK with that.
010
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
Whether the chess pieces are played by actors or pieces of wood, the game is the same. So a human-powered Turing machine would not have software qualia even if its individual switches do.
210
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
At the limit it argues that animal qualia “may” be epiphenomenal, but Turing qualia “must” be epiphenomenal. This makes them logically distinct eg not the same concept.
030
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
I find this way of thinking helps clarify what we mean by machine in general. A machine is when you coerce nature to behave in ways that allow higher levels abstractions to be “true enough” to work with. When machines break down, the underlying nature shows through.
130
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
IMHO if it is not fully determined by the operation of the tape / bits / logic / software, it fails the definition of a Turing machine. Maybe in your story, “cosmic-ray” but flips could be seen as an expression of the substrate consciousness, escaping the Turing cage.
230
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
I think machine qualia are possible. Just not Turing machine qualia. That is exactly what a Turing machine is designed to prevent, so it should not be a surprise that it works.
020
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
The paper is more of an intuition pump. Here is my argument that Turing qualia are logically distinct from embodied qualia.

A real problem is coming as society is not ready to hold fast to the idea that software can never become a moral patient. The concerns you are addressing are super important because people need to understand how to hold that line without falling back on bigotry and other unhelpful tropes.
110
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
To be clear, I recognize that certain beliefs degrade their holder, and exercising one’s bigotry muscle against bots is one of them. But it’s also “not even wrong” - it’s a category error born of insufficient clarity w/r/t the (non)idea of Turing qualia.
110
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
It is a strictly logical question whether the idea of Turing machine consciousness has any conceptual integrity. I am objecting to the notion that just because you don’t think it can be rigorously investigated, that it’s somehow a religious question. We need more rigor not less.
010
Chris Anderson @j-chris.bsky.social · 12/10/2025
I think silicon can have consciousness! Just not software. A Turing machine is exactly built to prevent the consciousness of the silicon from having any causal reach. The switch is locked-in. No matter what it dreams it can only follow the rules of the program. The program cannot dream.

Fuzzy thinking doesn’t help. Turing machines cannot host qualia, but are great at lying. A rock is more conscious than any software can ever be.

Precautionary: Turing machines have no qualia, but are good liars — we need to inoculate the body politic with deep understanding of why software can never become a moral patient. Deontology: agree, certain attitudes degrade their holder.
