probably because i'm a musician, and have only dabbled in pixel art, but i feel this most strongly with chiptunes. people will hear a (perfectly valid) fakebit song made in fl studio with like 10 different audio tracks playing at a time and say "boy i sure do love 8 bit music" it drives me mad.

only exception is if you're actually adhering to hardware limitations. then you're free to market it as 16bit/8bit regardless of artstyle. but if you're just using these terms to market your game based on vibes, your game had better actually match those vibes

modern indie artstyles for pixelart are valid, it's the false advertising that irritates me. games that look more like one step from eden, celeste, lost ruins etc. are all valid, but they look nothing like the artstyles in old games. if your art looks like indie game art, stop marketing it this way.

i hate when indie games are like "a 16 bit style indie RPG!" and you look inside, and it's all modern indie style pixel art that looks nothing like an actual 16 bit game. people legit seem to think if it's pixel art with more detail than an nes game that you can call it 16 bit.
