A little disappointed that the bird site will be where all the space tweets are going to stay, thanks to big E running both it and SpaceX.

Favourite shade of Le Creuset there. We have only one of those (the big one) but it’s delightful

Some sadsacks on the Other Site are bawling their eyes out and foaming at the mouth, blaming RL’s head of Comms for… the voids in the tank walls delaying Neutron? They couldn’t be more exemplary of shooting the messenger if they tried

the greatest Looney Tunes homage of all time, yes including 'Evil Dead II'. This is the only time describing a movie as a "love letter to cinema" is an actual compliment and not the kiss of death.

If dispassionate analysis can’t get to “and in conclusion, this is batshit” about something that’s batshit then it’s more concerned with *appearing* dispassionate than with being accurate or useful

In the UK, Australia, New Zealand (and no doubt other places that spell “color” with a U and “aluminum” ending with IUM), Coriander is the whole plant. Leaf, seed, stem, whatever. Cilantro isn’t a thing here, other than the American name for Coriander.

If people only knew how many off-the-shelf components regularly fly to orbit as perfectly serviceable and adequate parts…
Screenshot of text from the article linked in the post above. Text reads:
“””Inside it, everything that affects the quality of flight goes in one half and everything that does not goes in the other. The acceptance authority signed it, and quality assurance inspections are now carried out against it, which allows the company to use cheap parts wherever the engineering case for an expensive one is absent.

Not everybody who saw the result approved of how it had been built. “Once I saw some critics on the internet, oh my God, you’re using off-the-shelf solutions to fix some of the parts of your missile, your missile should be embarrassed to fly with this detail,” she said. “But this is exactly what cost-effective innovation is. If you are looking for a fancy, high-tech, ideal solution, it will be extremely expensive. You have to be able to be embarrassed as an engineer, but be proud as a Ukrainian providing a good product for a fair price.” “””

Your threat model is now “AI is dangerous because humans might redirect GPS-guided drones”?

They launched a thing they had total control over towards a bunch of vulnerable targets and chose not to limit or monitor where it was going or what it was doing. If I wrote a script to hack Medicare’s servers I’d be sent to jail, even if I included some RNGs to randomize which server got hacked

2) They’re profoundly, qualitatively different things. GPS spoofing is just shouting fake GPS satellite signals that overwhelm the real ones and ANY GPS receiver in the vicinity thinks it’s somewhere else

Specialised manufacturing robots is exactly my point. They’re built by people, and designed specifically for a specialised task. No AI is going to conjure up some drone-building specialised manufacturing robot from the æther

1) So the rogue cruise missile attacked the hospital? 2) Spoofing GPS signals is not hacking, and profoundly different to hacking a website

1) Again not what I said and not equivalent to what I said 2) I don’t know. Did they? What does “hack” mean in this context?

If you stop reading partway through a sentence it doesn’t mean what the whole sentence meant. A robot capable of bumbling through a kitchen and sometimes managing to open a drawer isn’t capable of assembling a drone, regardless whether it *has* fingers. The fingers can’t do what would be required

If I fire a guided missile at your town but don’t watch where it’s going and it hits the hospital, it would be a lie to say “a rogue missile attacked the hospital in your town”

OpenAI hacked the Medicare servers, using one of their LLMs which they gave instructions to and then deliberately didn’t limit or monitor what it was doing.

Like I said, AI doesn’t have the fingers it needs to do the work you’re afraid it will do
Limitations include Astra's latency, overheating finger servos, and high compute costs. The code is on GitHub. Earler benchmarks showed Astra's greatly…

Datacenters exist, of course. The datacenters capable of running the nonexistent AIs you imagine don’t. That is, the datacenters that exist are not sufficient to run your magically capable AI

And “drone factories” involve many hundreds of thousands of human fingers that your made-up AI doesn’t have, all doing human finger things your made-up AI couldn’t do even if it had them

Izaak @izaaak.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The datacenters needed to host and run the (nonexistent) AIs above don’t exist, except on paper and won’t be built because the money is running out, and even then aren’t capable of the above - especially at scale.

The AIs *capable of hacking into some dude’s FPV drone controller, manufacturing a bunch of drone parts, assembling them, putting them down outside somewhere to launch from, and then flying them to a target* don’t exist

That’s… not at all what I said? Bad things happen and are likely to continue happening but that’s no basis to assume some different and implausible (impossible) other bad thing will happen

These are AIs and their subagents running in datacenters that don’t and won’t exist? And flying millions of drones assembled by millions of fingers that AI doesn’t and won’t ever have? Forgive me if I don’t lose sleep over that.

Policing in the US is insane. City police? University/campus police? Australian police are all state police. Doesn’t matter if you commit a crime on campus, in the CBD, three hours away in rural nowheresville - it’s all the same police who handle it (imperfectly sure, but nothing like in the USA)

Catering to dour sadsacks and having boring, bureaucratic, legally impregnable, precise wording would instead limit the spread of the message - and that’s bad for everyone because the safety messages are good and should be shared widely

Izaak @izaaak.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Their whole bit is absurdism as a vehicle for sincere safety communications. The nature of absurdism though leaves open the risk of dour sadsacks being able to invent malicious meaning from the message.

The post I quoted was in response to people asking about the distance from the window to the barrel in precisely the same tongue-in-cheek spirit as the original post. If you insist on inferring malice from all of CPSC’s posts you’ll be able to. But none is actually implied.

Izaak @izaaak.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
None of that is implied here. The only message is “remove things from your baby’s crib which are a risk” and it’s a good one. Everything else you inferred came from you, not from CPSC
