Day 2 at CMS COP15 covered some key topics for IWC including Aquatic Working Group sessions on FADs, fisheries bycatch and marine pollution and an event on the Blue Corridors initiative, whilst the Plenary covered climate change and renewable energy.

The IWC, SPREP, and the Pacific Community (SPC) are meeting in New Caledonia to better understand the cetaceans of the Western Central Pacific Ocean. Bycatch, data sharing & conservation strategies are on the agenda & the conclusions will be reported to the IWC Scientific Committee in April.

Workshop moves to Lahille's dolphin. Initially the focus of a rapid response Task Team, a CMP followed in 2024. Just 600 individuals remain & the greatest threat is #bycatch in artisanal fisheries so work with fishing communities is the highest priority iwc.int/management-a...

The CMP workshop moves on to South American River Dolphins. 300+ died in a climate change-driven rise in river temps in 2023. Measures to rescue & monitor them are now part of this CMP which poses unusual challenges & requires the collective wisdom of IWC & range states. iwc.int/management-a...

Now underway - a week-long workshop on all IWC South American Conservation Management Plans began with SW Atlantic & SE Pacific right whales. Coordinators were able to share experiences, challenges & solutions for first time. The big benefits of bringing together CMP coordinators are already clear!
