For all the well-deserved criticism SXSW gets, the Games festival was formative in connecting me as a developer to my community, at least for a moment. One example; in 2023, right after taking the brick photo, I turned around and met Scott and Pete from @fuzzyg.host.

In 2024 I showcased Your Holy & Virtuous Heretic as an exhibitor, my biggest in person showcase at the time. It came right off the back of speaking at Parallels, and my student game was showcasing at the same time, running off pure adrenaline in one of the most crowded times of my life.

It really sucks to see SXSW Sydney go. I attended 2023 as a student volunteer, and it was my first time meeting devs from beyond Sydney. I learned a lot from guerilla-showcasing Your Holy & Virtuous Heretic that year, it was my first brush with the good and bad in the professional world of games.

In the time that I'm not spending on game development, I'm something of a birder. If you're interested in birds or avian ecology at all, you owe it to yourself to pick up @atawhaigames.bsky.social's Toroa Skycall. It's probably the best Bird Game I've ever played, in terms of Bird Gameplay.

The filter on backgrounds during battles is based on a failed attempt to replicate the look of Critters For Sale, which I mentioned earlier. This kind of morphed and mutated into something more akin to the Earthbound battle backgrounds. I still have no idea how it was implemented in CFS lol. 9/11

Likewise, for the art assets and character designs that I contract out to other artists (such as Bifrons and Scox), the restrictive use of colours makes them fit in without introducing byzantine style guidelines. 7/11

This has the side effect of helping me to indulge in the use of mixed media. Restricting colours through indexing makes incompatible assets and different art styles fit together. Introducing novelty has been a big factor in motivating me to continue making the game. 6/11

Crucially, the game is minimalist in very specific ways that, to be frank, let me cut corners. I suck at picking colours, so there's a hard limit of 4 colours per environment texture. For some, a palette this restrictive would make picking colours harder, but I find this much easier. 5/11

Visually, I took on a lot of intentional influence from 90s DOS action-DRPGs like Daggerfall and Ultima Underworld, RPG maker games like Middens and Gingiva, and the monochrome visuals of Critters For Sale. Some elements are inspired by the illustrations from the Dictionnaire Infernal. 2/11

As a solo developer it's really easy to get in my own head and lose sight of what makes the game worth making. On a personal note, today I am so overwhelmed with gratitude to @frostygamesfest.com. This is, by far, the most attention my game has gotten in one burst - under 1000 wishlists to over 1500. Small potatoes by indie standards, but huge for me, for my first game.

on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I kind of miss the xbox 360/ps3 era dirge of gimmick shooters. initially bland fps games with one wacky or interesting mechanic. on that note, I'm not really sure if the bionic commando wife-arm reboot from 2009 is "good", but I love it anyway.
