A post for every movie I watch. I might hate stuff you love or love stuff you hate. The world would be very dull if we all liked the same things.

📽️ Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949): I watched How to Make a Killing, which I heard was a rip-off of this, so I watched, and, yes. The remake's only advantage is Qualley, but that's not enough. This even has a better ending, plus Guinness in many roles! An unfortunate use of the n-word at the end.

📽️ Creepy (2016): Kiyoshi Kurosawa does another one (like Cure and Chime) about losing control of one's mind (if that's what they're about, I could be wrong). I ended up liking it, but it does take a while to get going. I did feel the indoor parts of the house could not have fit in that house.

📽️ The Bunker (2024): Stunt casting of Todd and Bell in a mash-up of Andromeda Strain and 10 Cloverfield Lane. Just awful. Terrible acting. Paper thin plot that goes nowhere. Another failed Bugonia-like. Why do people keep trying when they have nothing new to say?

📽️ Talk to Me (2022): People kept telling me this was good, but I didn't have high hopes, since I didn't care for Bring Her Back. This was alright, but felt very Blumhousian. Kids mess with powers beyond their ken, and then have to deal with the consequences, to predictable result.

📽️ Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007): Lumet's final movie. Misery porn. It's a good movie, great acting, but I don't know why I want to watch these losers losing. The weird alternating smash cut thing just drove me bonkers.

📽️ Casablanca (1942): Another long awaited rewatch. So great. Great characters, great dialogue, great story. Never fails to amaze me this was made during the war! They still didn't know how it was going to end! My fave bit: I'm shocked to find gambling! Here's your winnings.

📽️ Starman (1984): First rewatch in a LONG time. It holds up. Terrific pace. If anything the relationship feels a bit rushed, but that's ok, gotta balance the kissing with the explosions. Bridges was nominated for an Oscar! Allen should have been! A departure for Carpenter, but he made it work.

📽️ Descendent (2025): One of the actors from Resolution/The Endless wrote and directed this "is he crazy or was he abducted by aliens" flick, which has some good stuff in it, very creepy, but it's no Bugonia. All movies like this hinge on resolving that conflict, and this one totally botched it.

📽️ Resident Evil (2026): I don't know anything about the games, I just like Cregger's movies (so far), and I liked this one too! Insane zombie action that keeps ramping up all the way. The lead actor was great. I liked how he was basically a decent guy trying to do the right thing, but kinda hapless.

📽️ The Weight (2026): Ethan Hawke does Sorcerer, but with walking instead of trucks. I thought this was pretty great, very tense, there's action but it isn't really an action movie, y'know? Low point for me was the music/sound, very grating, which I get why, but wasn't necessary. Hawke is great obvs.

📽️ Hope (2026): Look, this is a good Korean action-horror, if you're into that you'll like it. But two things: do NOT watch the trailer, it spoils everything. And it is Part 1 so be prepared for that. Even though it is 2 hours 40 minutes.

📽️ The Kid Detective (2020): Not bad, but certainly no Under the Silver Lake. The story was good, but man the tonal shifts. Starts out as this goofy thing about this smart kid, then gets super duper dark. And man that final shot. Nobody comes out ahead in this.

📽️ Onslaught (2026): I really enjoyed it as an 80's throwback action flick (Michael Biehn is in it in case it isn't obvious enough). Campy (violent) fun. Only problem is the premise: they need supersoldiers to shoot at domestic civilians? Uh, sadly, they do not. Also crimes against grilling.

📽️ The Hunger (1983): Why did I think this was a werewolf movie all these years? It's supposed to be a vampire movie, but I'm not sure what it is, really. Stacked cast though. Stylish, but story-light; one truly horrific concept, and apparently a studio-mandated nonsense ending. But it's short!

📽️ Wolfen (1981): The pace and feel of a 70s NYC crime thriller, but instead of mobsters, it's werewolves (except it isn't really, spoilers). I had to look up what happened to the South Bronx in the 70s, that's a crazy story. This was ok, but I wish the terrorism/surveillance stuff had tied in more.

📽️ The Incredible Shrinking Wknd (2020): I was excited about the premise (a time loop that gets shorter and shorter), but this wasn't good. It didn't really use the idea for anything interesting, and didn't have anything to say. Some nice locations though. Also a gimmick where the screen narrows.

📽️The Howling (1981): I confuse this, Wolfen, and The Hunger in my mind, I've never seen any of them! Let's fix it. This starts out well, the journo catching the killer, then a lot of dead time, then a decent ending. The effects are mixed, but the makeup work is very good. Sayles co-wrote, but, enh.

Pure Scum (2025): Two young adults having a bad night in Melbourne. I really quite liked this, surprised at its low (5.7) imdb rating. Well written characters, well acted, in increasingly crazy situations. And the dialog was very clear, even with the accents! Take that, Nolan. Needs a better title?

📽️ We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021): Why did I watch this? I didn't like TV Glow, and this had the same languid pacing. It is only 85 minutes though. Anyway I like it better than Glow, it had some interesting stuff in it, but I still don't really get it.

📽️ Time Addicts (2023): Fun Australian time hopping adventure. Unfortunately my viewing experience was bad because I really needed subtitles but these were auto-generated and usually wrong. Also I watched it with ads, huge mistake. Still, it was well done and I thought the lead actress was very good.

📽️ Mikey and Nicky (1976): From the director of Ishtar! It's a crime drama with no crime. Two small-time crooks have one night of adventures in New York. Very strange flick. Falk, Casavettes, Ned Beatty, and even M Emmett Walsh in a small role! Good, but odd and literally dark.

📽️ Terrified (Aterrados) (2017): From the When Evil Lurks guy. This was good, but I wish it had tied everything together better. The concept of only being able to see things from certain angles should have been explored more and been more central to the plot. Glad it enabled Lurks later!

📽️ Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011): Another Miike remake of which I haven't seen the original. Not the feel-good movie of the year. A beautiful, but brutally tragic tale of death and honor. And more death. Lags a bit in flashback mode. The final fight is no 13 Assassins, but good.

📽️ Bringing Up Baby (1938): I'd never seen this classic screwball comedy, and, well. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood. It's the prototypical Manic Pixie Dream Girl movie, and that's not a genre I'm particularly interested in. Hepburn plays it very wacky, which I think doesn't read well today.

📽️ Spiderman: Brand New Day (2026): This was a good time. I don't have too much to say about it. I honestly think it's not as good as Thunderbolts*, while having a lot in common with it (maybe too much). But it definitely delivers what it promises.

📽️One Cut of the Dead (2017): Talked my kids into watching. One liked, one loved it. It is crazy how good this thing is. The amount of planning that must have gone into it is nuts. At one point the kid asked "Does it get any MORE meta than this?". I said no, but I forgot the end credits...

📽️ The Odyssey (2026): Felt more like a Villeneuve movie than a Nolan movie, which for me is not good. It was long, it was loud. The Ithaca stuff I found dull and the adventures I found not very exciting. I did think the overarching "Zeus' Law" plot was cool, in the end. I'm not contrarian, I swear!

📽️ Akira (1988): Kid had been getting into Anime, so this was required viewing. I still love the art and animation. The way the backstory of the city, the political situation, the unrest, and the Akira cult is all weaved into the story is amazing. Too bad about the ending. Kid liked it!

📽️ Labyrinth (1986): Kid wanted to rewatch (remembered nothing) and I'm always down. Connelly was already great, and Bowie is, well, Bowie, but the Muppets are the stars. Just a 100% pure joy of a kid's movie. Except, why do we have to watch Hoggle pee? Kid liked it except the ending.

📽️ The Long Walk (2025): If you know the premise, that's pretty much the movie. Like Stand By Me with more kids and they get killed one by one. A movie like this need a crazy ending and this was kinda bland. Also, I had no idea that was Mark Hamill.

📽️ Buffet Infinity (2025): Stylistically swigs for the fences and very nearly hits it out of the park. Drags in places (esp late), but a super fun, hilarious, bizarre puzzle. I usually prefer being told a story, rather than being given the pieces to make up my own, but I'll make an exception here.

📽️ Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die (2025): Not much to say about this, it's an enjoyable trifle, ultimately not that interesting, but at times amusing. At other times juvenile and annoying. The social commentary is shallow, but on point.

📽️ Excalibur (1981): A dream, to some. A nightmare to others! Saw it in a theater for the first time! This movie still rules. I love Merlin so much. It's great that they always light the sword so it glows green. Gabriel Byrne! Patrick Stewart! Liam Neeson! Let's all speak the charm of making!

📽️ Evil Dead Burn (2026): There's a lot of well done, clever sequences here, stuff I haven't seen before. There is also a LOT of gore. There is barely any story, but it's an Evil Dead movie, what did you expect? I can see why Raimi picked this guy to direct, I'll have to search up his earlier film.

📽️ Hijacked (2025): My first Vietnamese action flick (I think). It was pretty good! I wish they'd been clearer on the layout of the plane. Some of the plot and action were a bit confusing. But I was interested the whole time. Also a guy gets beaned by an unripe durian, how often do you see that?

📽️ Enola Holmes 3 (2026): Ok, ok, but I watched the first two with the kids, so we watched this. It wasn't entirely terrible, but the mystery was thin, the solution weak, and wanted you to remember the other movies too much (so many clips). Also the "Enola getting married" story was maudlin and dull.

📽️ The Haunting (1963): Kid watched for film class, I joined in. I know this is a classic, so I feel kind of bad that I was mostly bored. I liked Johnson, who reminded me a lot of Timothy Dalton (esp. from Doom Patrol). But, man, if you find banging noises scary, this is definitely the movie for you.

📽️ The Thing (1982): Had to introduce my kid, who is taking a survey of horror/scifi film class, to this classic. The practical effects are the draw, of course, but Russell is as great as always, and the story is tense as heck. Just a banger from beginning to end.

📽️ Lee Cronin's The Mummy (2026): Despite the title, Lee Cronin is not the mummy. I ended up liking this, but only because the last 30 minutes are utterly nuts. But the structure is wrong; first they tell you, then they show you, then they reveal. Could have been an Evil Dead movie almost verbatim.

📽️ Blow Out (1981): Lurid, but serviceable, thriller from De Palma. The movie that killed Travolta's career, then resurrected it (because Tarantino). It's the mood and setting that make this movie. My favorite were the paeans to movie making, as Travolta carefully recreates the murder through film.

📽️ The Asphalt Jungle (1950): Decent heist flick (Reservoir Dogs has some DNA from this, although in this one they actually show the heist). Weirdly, almost no music in the whole movie. Early Marilyn Monroe role. Sadly, turns into copaganda at the end (even though the main cop character is crooked!)

📽️ Supergirl (2026): Guardians of the Galaxy 3 + True Grit + John Wick. Yes, I wish they'd come up with a more original story, I didn't love the flashback sequences, but overall it was a fun time. Good action sequences, and Alcock was very good. Gunn didn't direct but you can still feel him in it.

📽️ Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981): In a theater, first time in 45 years. People say Indy makes no difference to the outcome, but without him, the bad guys would have recovered the Ark at the end, right? Wait, how DID he get it off that enemy submarine base??? Still an all-time great adventure flick.

📽️ The Illusionist (2010): No, not that one (which is terrible), this is an animated film from the director of Tiplets of Belleville, and written by Jacques Tati, but made 18 years after he died. A lovely film, maybe a meditation on parenthood, maybe not. There is almost no dialog, and no close ups.

📽️ The Furious (2025): If you want to watch guys beat each other up for two hours, this is your flick. The fight coreography is insane. So much grappling. The story is good enough to hold it together. Everything else is great: acting, sets, editing, sound design, etc. Top notch martial arts madness.

📽️ Chime (2024): Another Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Horror shorts are hard, and I didn't get what this one was trying to do. Seems to have some overlap with the story in Cure? But different? Still, Kurosawa's style goes a long way.

📽️ The Serpent's Path (1998): Kiyoshi Kurosawa's revenge movie; it's brutal, and did not end the way I expected. Predates Prisoners by 15 years, but a lot of similarities. He remade it in 2024, have to check that out. His movies are all so different. Except maybe for the grimy aesthetic he loves.

📽️ GOAT (2026): Kid suggested. Animated basketball-ish movie in the Wild Robot style. It's fine. Some fun style, good characters and acting. Story is standard kid movie "follow your dreams" fare. A bit hyperkinetic for my taste. Patton Oswalt is in it, so it's got that going for it.

📽️ Trainspotting (1996): Movies about addiction are usually boring (or preachy). This one isn't. Sometimes shocking, sometimes funny, it's more about the characters than the addiction. Killer soundtrack. I feel that Requiem for a Dream is vastly overrated, this is way better.

📽️ The Handmaiden (2016): Good, obvs, but I think the "twistiness" of it was oversold to me, it has like 1-1.5 twists. I did like the reveal of what kind of books the dude collected, is that a twist? I liked this better than Old boy, but not as much, I think, as No Other Choice.
