New car registration data from SMMT for September 2026. Surprise increase in diesel registrations given it's now about £2 per litre and will probably rise even more. Pure electric (BEV) doing well. PHEV increasing lots - but I really think many of those buyers would have been better off with a BEV
New car registration data from SMMT.
Petrol down 6.7%. Pure electric (BEV) up 36.3%.

He can't buy an EV without it including some plastics. What he has chosen to do is not to buy any more petrol or diesel, because that's what he can do. Petrol is a direct product of an oil company rather than hidden in another product (the thing he actually bought - a car), which cannot be escaped.

New car registration data for August out today. What do the last 4 months of data show? Petrol down, BEV up. Every month. Reality makes no difference to some petrol-head YouTubers, but manufacturers need to take notice if they are going to succeed. www.smmt.co.uk/vehicle-data...
New car registrations for August 2026. Petrol down 3.5%. BEV up 27.7%.New car registrations for July 2026. Petrol down 5.2%. BEV up 44.5%.New car registrations for June 2026. Petrol down 4.0%. BEV up 35.0%.New car registrations for May 2026. Petrol down 7.1%. BEV up 34.2%.

Some European carmakers are doing better than others. Renault 5 selling like hot cakes. BMW doing well with its EVs. EV sales have been increasing steadily and petrol and diesel sales decreasing. August data out on a few days www.smmt.co.uk/vehicle-data... Here's July data.
July 2026 data from SMMT. New petrol car registrations down 5.2%. New diesel registrations down 17.7%. New BEV registrations up 44.5%.

Indeed. EV sales have been growing, and petrol/diesel dropping, for a while. Here's the data from the last 3 months. The trend has been this way for years.
July 2026, BEV registrations up 44.5%, petrol down 5.2%
June 2026, BEV registrations up 35.0%, petrol down 4.0%
May 2026, BEV registrations up 34.2%, petrol down 7.1%

There are only a handful of countries (eg some gulf states) in which electricity generation is primarily oil. Eg in the UK right now.

Now in Colmar. I heard about this place from a video by @tillathenun.bsky.social . It's very picturesque. For the drive from Thun (Switzerland) to here, we told the satnav to avoid toll roads. Not because I'm cheap (although I am) but to take a more scenic route. Highly recommended!

I'm in France, just witnessed a crime against coffee. This was what I got when I asked for a cappuccino - at an otherwise very good restaurant. Is this a "normal" French thing that I didn't know about, or am I right to be appalled?

Grindelwald, in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland. Stunning scenery, and lucky with the weather. On the EV side of things - charged the car in Interlaken at 0.55 CHF (52p) per kWh ("M-Charge" by Migrol), so not everything is expensive in Switzerland.

EVs are great on the mountain roads around the Sorrento Peninsula, and in Italian car parks which seem to specialise in unreasonably steep and narrow ramps. However ... the area around Sorrento is very badly served for rapid charging. There seemed to be only one rapid charger in the whole area.

Today I learnt that lots of things are closed in Annecy on Mondays - effectively the weekend here is Sunday and Monday. However, I also experienced the best feature of any shopping mall I've been to 😀

Second stop Annecy. Again, glad to be in an EV. Went the scenic route through Switzerland. EVs are great in mountains. Loads of easily controllable torque going uphill, no constant gear changing, no need to do anything special going down hill (ie don't need to remember to use engine braking).

First day of roadtrip. Glad we decided on a short first day, and glad to be in an EV. We were able to have the aircon on while waiting for 3 hours due to a delay at Le Shuttle. First stop Reims.

My EV needs hardly any maintenance, so it's disappointing that it doesn't come with a tool to help the one common maintenance task that is needed. I had to make my own.

This appears to be the article you are quoting: www.forbes.com/sites/neilwi... In which the table appears to show 24 years for cars driving under 5000km (IE. 3000 miles). According to Google, average annual mileage in India = 12000km, Indonesia = 15000km
Table showing 0-3k miles / 0-5k kilometers having break-even year 24. Next category (3-5k miles) shows break-even year 9.

SMMT new car registration data for March. BEV registrations continue to increase. Any bump due to people wanting to beat the "expensive car supplement" (which is a bit of a misnomer because average new car costs more than 40k)? www.smmt.co.uk/vehicle-data... www.autoexpress.co.uk/features/366...

New car registration data out today www.smmt.co.uk/vehicle-data... BEV up 41.6% in January 2025 compared to same month 2024. I was expecting low BEV registrations due to pre-registering in 2024 to hit LEV targets. Maybe BEV sales are better than fossil fuel funded newspapers have been saying.
