Oh man. Seeing this last night to a nearly full house with live score provided by ten thousand lakes was a peak IU Cinema experience for me. Mephisto is Emil Jannings is F.W. Murnau: the deceitful illusionist, the liar, the one who dazzles & tricks the amazed viewer

lol great line (“countless otherwise smart people who publicly accepted the story without question, like baby birds yearning for a worm”)

It’s always instructive to look back at the first dozen or so Nobel winners in Literature. Who will be the next Eucken or Echegaray?

Alert for Thackeray fans-- this novel (the Simp, by @roshansethi.bsky.social) is sharp and amusing, and contains a "Vanity Fair" subtext throughout; it's the protagonist's favorite book, and he spends a lot of time brooding over whether he's more of a Becky Sharp or an Amelia Sedley

The left has come up with this weird formula for winning elections: “crafting positions that appeal to voters.” How do they pull this off??!

This was so great & funny. Visited the Etches Museum of Jurassic Marine Life, a fossil museum in Dorset based on the lifetime collection of Steve Etches, a fossil hunter, from the local area on the Jurassic Coast. Best exhibit features Etches’ workshop & *Etches himself* working behind glass 😮

I appreciate this use of the term “argy-bargy” (“The colorful phrase is a variant of the earlier Scots phrase argle-bargle. Both parts of the word playfully combine a modification of "argue" with a nonsense rhyming repetition (a linguistic device known as reduplication)”)

John Ruskin in 1860: “Once I could speak joyfully about beautiful things, thinking to be understood;- now I cannot any more; for it seems to me that no one regards them. [M]en, wherever they can reach, destroy all beauty….Every perfect and lovely spot which they can touch, they defile”

I enjoyed the needle drop of the Dils’s 1978 anthem “Class War” in the Lowdown. “I wanna war, between the rich and the poor/ I wanna fight and know what I'm fighting for/ In a class war, class war, class war, class war/ This war, that war, class war, last war”
