I still assume every one of these headlines is meant, in a roundabout way, to drive AI investment via the cybersecurity angle. "Look what the bots can do! Better get your own bots to protect your company!"

oh no we built a machine that parses everything you feed it as vibey statistical weights and now instead of strictly obeying our instructions, it's parsing them as vibey statistical weights

the only way AI will kill us all is if we accelerate climate disaster by pouring absurd amounts of resources and energy into this horseshit

Rebecca Harding @itsbexy.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I can't tell how much of the "AI might come alive and kill us!!" nonsense is genuine technoreligious fervor from silicon valley true believers, and how much is just meant to juice up demand for AI security services. "Protect your company from malicious AI by investing in security AI" etc

I feel that you're the one leaning hard on universal statements here. I am the one arguing that two different cases are different. You are arguing that one case must be true because the other is.

For those who have not already begun to rely on AI in their workflow (which I would wager most anti-AI folks intentionally have avoided doing), it's extremely easy to just... never start. People can't really succumb to an addiction they haven't formed in the first place.

When you buy something from Amazon, you receive a physical item that you want or need. There are of course horrible conditions & externalities supporting that process, but the convenience of Acquiring Items is what tempts people. There is nothing tempting me to hop on a chatbot and start prompting.

when constructing a maze for our lab rat, we unknowingly created a valid path to the cheese. it was an easy mistake to make, and that's what allowed the rat to proceed further than expected. nevertheless, this demonstrates the terrifying mental prowess of hyperintelligent rats

the other angle is: this will appeal to gullible corporate/government suits who panic over the security implications, and think to themselves "I need this tech on my side before it gets used against me!" openAI is hoping this will help get some contracts signed baybeeeee

Rebecca Harding @itsbexy.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
it's pretty apparent there was a similar level of coaxing involved here. they put a digital rat in a digital maze, and when it successfully reached the digital cheese, they put out a press release about how it wasn't supposed to do that omg

remember the "Claude has learned to blackmail people!!" news stories? and then it turned out what actually happened was: claude was explicitly prompted with a fictitious blackmail roleplay scenario, and it gave responses which matched that scenario. it was just giving them the old "yes, and"

lot of extremely credulous reactions to this "breach" imo it's a publicity stunt. "But it sounds evil, why would they want that publicity?" because it makes the tech sound impressive and powerful. the breathlessly fearful press coverage and viral posts only help mythologize the product

why is it a policy objective of this government to encourage mass consumer adoption of a highly unpopular commercial product "increase adoption from 12% to 75%" GET REAL

Rebecca Harding @itsbexy.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
Not a word about intellectual property theft, despite the government's own CHPC committee recommending it be addressed Gov taking the executive-class brainrot stance that AI adoption should be encouraged and funded, with no particular use-case in mind A document by and for starry-eyed suckers

huge amount of season screentime dedicated to a pair of chekov's guns (the virus and V1) that didn't end up factoring into the finale. so the plot structure of the season doesn't even have "setting the table" as an excuse

did literary tropes teach Claude to be evil? must we now labour to undo the ethical mis-training that the sci-fi canon has wrought? no, lmao literary tropes taught Claude how to generate a contextually-appropriate response within a fictitious scenario this was always obvious

Rebecca Harding @itsbexy.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
"We typed a blackmail roleplay scenario into our language pattern-matching machine, and due to the existence of literary tropes in its training data, it gave responses that matched the blackmail roleplay scenario."

love it when an AI support chatbot gives you the ol' Reverse Pagliacci
ME: Any attempt to connect via SFTP in Filezilla immediately results in the error message "Could not read from socket, socket unexpectedly closed"

WALTER, AI AGENT: The error "Could not read from socket, socket unexpectedly closed" in Filezilla when connecting via SFTP can often be caused by network issues, firewall settings blocking the connection, or incorrect server credentials. It's advisable to check your internet connection, verify your login credentials, and ensure no firewall is preventing the connection. If the issue persists, contacting your hosting provider for further support might be needed.

ME: but you are the hosting provider

Vance obviously sucks, but he does not have access to the bizarre mythic cult of personality that inspires sycophancy in Trump's allies and cowardice in his enemies, so like... that does seem like a better situation to deal with

I would assume that the A.M.A. knows better than you what the A.M.A.'s stance is. If you have perhaps misunderstood what their position is, and gone on to publish that misunderstanding in print, then it would be appropriate to seek clarification, instead of sending petulant replies on bluesky

and presumedly the actor's agent is the actual person crunching numbers and figuring out that's the amount they can get their client like, if I were an actor I would be too anxious to personally ask for large amounts of money. thats why the agent figures it out and if its Huge Number then hell yeah

The game you are about to play is a product of its time. It may depict the PS3, which was commonplace in society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.
