NYC second worldwide is crazy, but I'm going to white knight for my city a bit: * Metro coverage is very dense * Clear positive changes in the last 20 years: no cars in central park, pedestrianizing Broadway, congestion pricing, some daylighting

(sry for math pedantry, your point still stands) I think this figure assumes all games are 50/50 coin flips: 1/2^63 by earth's population is around 1.15 billion. If you make reasonable guesses about likeliest outcomes, you could do MUCH better than 1/2^63

Democracy is falling apart, and if we let it die, it's game over whether Trump is popular or not. People banking on things like "unpopularity" and "6 months" are asleep at the wheel. When your opponent brings a gun to a chess game, you should probably stop playing chess

Other obvious moves * Pass stringent voter ID legislation (ongoing - see SAVE act) * Invite white supremacists to violently patrol voting sites, a la Jan 6. Ensure DOJ+FBI allow it * Gut election oversight agencies (see attempted firing of Ellen Weintraub) * Intimidate poll workers (weaponize DOJ)

* Imo applying AI to SWE processes only improves productivity short-term. SWE by hand involves: learning (general SWE patterns, lang patterns, system specifics), implicit bugfinding, context building. Not just doing the task. Bureaucratic engineering processes are systemically blind to this value

To be clear my negative views of AI are based on: * I prefer information environments to have a high % human generated content * Large corps own the LLMs * Companies salivating to use AI to fire ppl * Companies salivating to shoehorn AI chatbots into CRUD apps to get that sweet sweet VC mone

If companies are punished for being pro trans, companies are incentivized to become. Companies that do not are less competitive, more likely to go out of business, less likely to receive capital funding. It's basic stuff. It's sinister stuff
000
Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
If you make it tax advantaged to implement anti trans policies, there will be more anti trans policies, period. This isn't a question of single company action, it's a question of capital flowing to the highest returns. Which it will. Water doesn't flow uphill, capital doesn't flow away from returns

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
Offering financial rewards or punishments for companies to take stances on social issues is pernicious. At an individual level its easy to view this as a carrot or a stick, which an individual company can choose whether to respond to. But zoomed out, it's better viewed as a tax or a subsidy.

3. Expectations of incentives (financial sanctions, financial subsidies, antitrust action, other forms of favor) by the Trump admin toward FB based on their choice of moderation policy. I sort of think this is why? Kind of obviously?

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
2. Some kind of mechanism of direct control. I've seem claims on this site that there's overlap between FB policy setters and project 2025 authors. Seems possible and easy to verify

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
What is the mechanism by which the US 2024 presidential election changed facebooks moderation policy? Some ideas: 1. The election revealed new information to FB about US public opinion. This seems to be FBs party line and I don't buy it for a second. Surely they have direct access to sentiment info

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
Like, I do understand that a particular choice of moderation policy may be more or less free. But it seems far more significant to me that the moderation policy is responsive to US Presidential politics
100
Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
Facebook chooses its moderation policy. This policy may be more or less stringent, which raises interesting questions about free speech. Facebook then CHANGES its moderation policies as a direct result of a changing political regime. This is sort of obviously a more significant free speech issue?

Definitely true and I'm not disputing this. I would prefer a larger $ toll with massively expanded exemptions for low income commuters (the exemptions as they stand are paltry). I still believe the policy as it stands is net good for all poor people taken together.

A. Poor person who drives into CBD B. Rich person who drives into CBD C. Poor person who takes transit D. Rich person who takes transit I agree with you that congestion pricing hurts A more than B. I claim that C and D outnumber A and B, and that C:A is a higher ratio than D:B

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 26/12/2024
> anywhere from between 27-35% of low income households drive a car daily in NYC.* "Drive a car in NYC" =/= "Drive that car into the central business district tolling zone". I'm seeing 80% of ppl who commute to the CBD take transit? With rich ppl using autos at higher rates?

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 26/12/2024
> The hyper wealthy will pay this tax and it will mean less than nothing to them I think this is a good thing? Don't let poor ppl drive = regressive. Take $9 from the rich and give it to the MTA = progressive. Perhaps both are happening and the former is bad the latter is definitely good.

Liam @its-liam.bsky.social · 26/12/2024
>[...poorer people are] the only group likely to cease driving due to financial strain Disagree with this. It is reasonable for someone rich to have a "drive into Manhattan" willingness to pay that is < $9. More often true of poor ppl but still very possible for rich
