I'm still gonna make it, because it'll teach me how to make the follow-up game (that nobody else will ever make), but it does give me some pause. If you can play a VR mod of a super cheap legacy game or rom, why would you spend $20 on my bespoke indie VR game? Hybrid or dedicated?

Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 12h
There are a couple of VR game ideas I've had for years, but there is a serious chance that within the next 6-12 months, one of them is released by a non-game dev as a vibe coded VR mod, and I dunno how to feel about that.
100
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 12h
But then there's also the possibility of a WoW Classic situation, where they can't ignore the demand they're leaving unmet. So I guess I hope the good mods become wildly popular so the IP holders decide to give it a real shot themselves.

Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 12h
If you already have a headset, fine, enjoy playing the mods that aren't terrible or cookie-cutter, but I'm not sure it actually moves the needle on the problem of smart money avoiding the hell out of making new VR games. It might move the needle backwards.
100
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 12h
But my assumption was that it would be companies like F2VR and Capcom and IOI learning VR game development by adapting legacy games. It wasn't supposed to be vibe coded free mods of games that have been sitting in people's Steam and rom libraries for years, already-purchased.

I liked Flat2VR's commercial work because they were using expertise and intentionality to help normalize that transition that I've long felt was gonna be a key part of VR's start as an established gaming medium. Eye-tracked foveation and wireless are also key features that are becoming standard.

Nvidia's already begun making computer hardware intended to facilitate local LLM compute. It's not great compared to beefy GPUs, but tomorrow's models probably will be just fine on them. Especially after the bubble burst forces the adaptation.
000
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 12h
Nevermind cheap inference. The tech will survive the bubble burst at a minimum because quantized open models are almost as good but can run on beefy PCs today, aka normal or even small PCs and phones tomorrow.

I bet part of why they're mad is that a doctor that is against/afraid of those policies has every reason to pack up and leave for a more friendly state, often taking their patients with them. It's causing a well-known brain drain.
000
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 16h
Because I remember games like Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, where basically Capcom ghosted the community shortly after launch and left the game in a pretty wack state. Some of us kept playing it anyway, but it has a lot of annoying problems that another few months of updates would've solved.
000
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 16h
It sucks that they needed to be Riot-successful and not fighting game-successful, because it means they never had a chance to keep their jobs post-launch. But it kinda owns that Riot is letting them rock for a few months to wrap up the game with extra patches, and launching the chars they had left.

It's crazy that Jacob Geller's punishment for committing a crime against humanity was losing a radio station gig and taking a one semester break from college. I've seen so much worse punishments for far lesser crimes.

If it's up to IGS, then... It's up to us to get the numbers up on it for it to make sense for them to bring it back.

Even if it was gen AI, the chance of McConnell's scotus upholding that ruling was essentially 0. Even if they weren't in the pocket of big tech, upholding a ruling like that would crash the US economy. So it makes sense to narrow it down to something else

The first guy is a microcosm of the whole problem. 233 commits on May 6th. 17k over the last year. Clicked one. "No Longer Maintained" apparently because the code sucks, after working in it for months. issues doc is 1200 lines of bugs that will never get fixed. Tragedy. Comedy

In 10 years, the totality of his answering for what he did was a single-semester suspension from college and being fired from a college radio show. Shit, maybe that's specifically why he got into content creation. You don't have to pass a background check to become a YouTuber.

There's this through line when it comes to people who are accused of this. It's that in nearly every instance, it's such a non-event to them that they pursue a highly visible form of success, as if this monstrous thing they know is in their past simply doesn't matter.

It makes a lot more sense to delay any visit until Democrats are in charge, just to avoid the risk of an effective permanent ban from entering the US.

No-one is saying this, but if you are turned away at the border, it makes it *extremely difficult* to ever enter the country in the future, even with a less-xenophobic administration. So the recommendation is for non-residents to avoid visiting during this period of record border entry rejections

I think if IGS is cool with it, they legally cannot say they are because technically IP protection effort stuff kicks in that Epic would put their foot down on. My hope is it blows up bigger than the OG launch and Epic goes the WoW Classic route to spin it back up.

A quick scroll reveals that Keits has been quiet on this. So it's either a C&D already on the way or it's a one eye closed, the other looks at everything but the private server situation, as long as no monetization fuckery shows up. I lean towards the latter, yet...

Case in point. Projects like shmupmame making that experience even somewhat accurate for hardcore shmups are relatively recent finesses of that work
010
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 30/09/2026
Most of my retro gaming is shmups, and the thing about those is that getting the hardware accuracy right is so difficult that most official ports screw it up really badly. Except maybe M2

Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 30/09/2026
I thought the whole point of FPGAs was that you got accuracy by emulating the hardware. So I have a fundamental lack of understanding of what the end result of a vibe coded FPGA core even is.

I logged 50 days of playtime in this game as a child. Kept leveling side jobs. My main only ever got to like level 70ish IIRC. And there was almost no soloing back then. This may replace my FFXIV trial install on my Steam Deck…

If you're a game dev, you're never gonna be impressed by AI code generation because those types of projects largely don't exist in a context that allows these models to learn how to make games.
000
Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 29/09/2026
It's a catch-22. It's possible to use AI code generation in a way that generates good code and little to no bugs, but if you have the skills and time to ensure that, then you don't really benefit much from the AI in the first place.

They finally pushed an update to my pixel watch that forced me to switch to gemini instead of google assistant. It's a very small number of things I actually want outta my watch. Now I gotta use an AI every time I wanna set a reminder or a timer. God damn it

I stopped listening to the radio in 2004 after moving away from NYC and finding my new state's radio stations to be terrible. Music hits very different when you have to invoke explicit intentionality every time you wanna hear something new

on /r/shmups, when people post their vibe-coded recomps, we simply ask if they have a PCB, and when they say no, we go ah, well. Cool work, I guess. But without a PCB and without the willingness to hand-emulate frame by frame footage... You can only really enjoy it if you don't know any better

It's like the meme of two dudes on a bus. The happy one is completely oblivious to your existence. You're sitting on the other side, seething about the stuff that brings him joy. Why? Yes, it sucks, but let them live. It doesn't affect you

Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 29/09/2026
Know what rules? Retro games that run on accurate emulators or old hardware. All this "it makes me mad that these things exist" stuff is just you hitting yourself in the head, unprompted. Stop hitting yourself

I understand your beef, but instead of validating it like everyone else, I'm gonna tell you to stop watching MVG videos and stop paying attention to the websites that report on vibe coded recomps and decomps. Ignore them and keep playing the games you like the way you like them.

Noetic @itnoetic.blacksky.app · 28/09/2026
The AI catch-22 is if you lack the skills to do the thing without the AI, then you lack the ability to discern its outputs' quality. Thus, slop. If you have the skills and experience needed to discern the quality, then you probably don't stand to gain all that much from using the AI.

Like how would loading times be influenced in each game by what data is at what distance from the center, etc.

I'm very curious as to how the "optimal space usage" question would be answered as rendered by where the bits would actually be physically placed on the disc as opposed to a superimposed pie chart.
