1/2 I fear Brooks is indicative of a large amount of straight-up denial in the "Establishment". And I mean "denial" in the sense of a reflexive psychological defense mechanism, not sleazily deliberate PR. In the same PBS Newshour segment, Brooks says amidst condemning incivility on all sides...
David Brooks's most negative statement about Georgia GOP Senate nominee opposing the Democratic incumbent, Sen. Jon Ossoff:

"Like, Mike Collins, who's the Georgia Republican, I think what's accurate to say about him is, he has a disturbing number of young men on his --- around him who have ties to the alt-right and somem of the vile antisemitic stuff online."

From his usual weekly "Brooks and Capehart" segment on the the PBS NewsHour, in this case the rendition on Friday, Oct 9, 2026. You can see video at 3:46 in the official PBS NewsHour YouTube of this segment ["Brooks and Capehart on the fight for Senate control in battleground states" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgWIxbB8f28 ]

Maybe it's a little wrong to use a quote from a "meta"-Simpsons episode --- this one being the Season 11 finale that's a parody of those VH1 "Behind the Music" documentaries of musicians' sordid, career-derailing personal lives --- but, man oh man, do I find this quote applicable to so many people!
Screenshot from the Season 11 finale "Behind the Laughter" of _The Simpsons" (Season 11, Episode 22, original airdate 2000-05-21 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behind_the_Laughter)

In the screenshot you see Homer sitting in a director's-style folding chair behind the scenes on a set being interviewed in a parody of those VH1 documentaries "Behind the Music" that became stereotyped as being more about how oh-so-many rock and pop musicians' careers were derailed by drug problems or other sordid things in their personal life than about those rock and pop musicians' actual music.

Homer sits next to a big TV showing the scene from Season 6, Episode 5 "Sideshow Bob Roberts" in which he clings to a wrecking ball that the nefarious Sideshow Bob, now Mayor of Springfield after election fraud engineered by the Springfield Republican Party, is hoping will destroy the Simpsons home on Evergreen Terrace, ostensibly to create a new freeway (but actually for revenge, natch!)

As this is a "meta"-episode parodying VH1's "Behind the Music" the conceit is Homer is actually an actor and this scene where he grabbed onto a wrecking ball in a silly, cartoonishly, and comedically doomed effort to stop it wrecking his house was actually a major stunt, one that greviously injured Homer, sending him on his addiction spiral to pain killers.

Ok, with all that overkill of context, finally the quote! Homer says to the documentarian's camera:

"Why did I take such punishment?
Let's just say that fame was like a drug.
But, what was even more like a drug was the drugs!"

1/2 Though since this is Bluesky, maybe my last post (ie, Snoopy & Woodstock fanart as James T. Snoop & Mr. Stock) isn't that mix of lefty-yet-bound-to-piss-off-other-lefties that's Bluesky's stock and trade. Also, it arguably wasn't enough of a "not quite Star Trek". So, here goes...
The design of the "Propaganda Trek" t-shirt from sci-fi-focused cultural critic Damien Walter, aka "DAMO" [e.g., https://www.youtube.com/@DamienWalter for his video essays, has links to his writings and other work] Available for purchase at https://damosays-shop.fourthwall.com/products/propaganda-trek-2

The design is has a overwhelmingly red-and-black color scheme, befitting the topic advertised in big red text on a black background at bottom: FULLY AUTOMATED LUXURY SPACE COMMUNISM (a reference most directly to the ideas of the 2019 book with that title by Aaron Bastani, for summary see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fully_Automated_Luxury_Communism which in turn, IIRC, can be seen to be directly inspired by this essay by Peter Frase from 2011 (think "Occupy Wall Street" Era) and the line of work it inspired https://jacobin.com/2011/12/four-futures [novelty link to get around paywall if you're that type of Commie who opposes private *intellectual* property https://archive.ph/UljTT ]

The design has a very Leon-Trotsky-looking Mr. Spock on the left facing a Starfleet insignia in the center to which a sickle has been added to mash it up with the Hammer and Sickle that was the key symbol of the USSR's flag, and then mirroring Trotsky/Spock, we see a very Vladimir-Lenin-Looking Jean-Luc Picard looking at the Hammer andd Sickle Starfleet Insignia

At the risk of seeming weird, here's fan art that I made of Captain James T. Snoop and his BFF/Science Officer/#1 Mr. Stock.
Snoopy and Woodstock dressed as Kirk and Spock in _Star Trek_ (The Original Series) uniforms. Thus, Snoopy is in black pants and a yellow command officer's top a la Original Series Kirk. His eyes are closed looking pensively cute. Woodstock is in black pants and a blue science officer's top. He additionally has the Mr. Spock bowl cut hairdo and pointy ears compared to normal. He's looking very logically serious.

Base picture was made with Microsoft Copilot off the prompt "Can you draw a cute cartoon white beagle a la Snoopy wearing a Star Trek (Original Series) yellow shirted uniform a la Captain Kirk and a cute yellow bird a la Woodstock with pointed ears and a Star Trek (Original Series) blue shirted uniform a la Mr. Spock?"

I then did minor manual drawing over with my Apple Pencil in iPad Photos since Copilot does bizarre eyebrows in my experience, plus it gave Woodstock a rather demonically sharply pointed nose, also weirdly left certain black outlines of the figures incomplete.

Post a #Vampire that isn't Dracula...
Snoopy and Woodstock as Vampires, sitting on the ground. Snoopy is on the left smiling and generally looking not at all like an unholy representative of The Damned in a cape with a purple outer lining, red inner lining, and a green circular amulet(?) clasping the cape together around his neck. He also has fangs that extend beyond the closed lips of his smile. Woodstock sits to the right next to hip in a similar cape (though it's not open enough to see its inner lining. To me he just looks bemused about whether this bit is landing or not. ;)

3/n ... that the fraud they're alleging is "phantom enrollees" made up by *insurance brokers* who get paid per-enrollee fees by both the fed gov't and by insurance companies to find enrollees who are eligible for ACA premium subsidies. Pertinently, these appear later in the FOX News segment...

Since Trump Admin officials generally only speak through a rabid propaganda filter, it's hard to hear what the underlying fraud is. *BUT* there is serious potential fraud, as one can see in the medical insurance company trade press, fraud by them! www.managedhealthcareexecutive.com/view/vance-l...
Screenshot of the "Key Takeaways" atop this Sept 22, 2026 news story from _Managed Healthcare Executive_ https://www.managedhealthcareexecutive.com/view/vance-led-antifraud-efforts-slashes-750-000-from-aca-enrollment

They read:

"Key Takeaways

* Federal subsidies will be halted for 750,000 ACA enrollees, with an additional 419,000 cases reviewed for lawful residency and income eligibility compliance.

* CMS instituted a six-month pause on adding new ACA brokers, aiming to disrupt purported broker-driven fraudulent enrollments tied to insurer-paid commissions."

Does the Inertia of a Body Depend on its Midichlorian-Content?
A modified (desecrated?) version that I made of the top half of the first page of the first officially published English translation of Albert Einstein's famous 1905 paper that derived E =mc^2, namely:

Einstein, Albert. "Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig?" Annalen der Physik, vol. 323, no. 13, 1905, pp. 639–641. Reprinted in English translation as "Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy-Content?" in _The Principle of Relativity: A Collection of Original Memoirs on the Special and General Theory of Relativity_, translated by W. Perrett and G. B. Jeffery, Methuen and Company, Ltd., London, 1923, pp. 67–71.

[Sidenote: The paper, being inarguably one of the top physics papers of all time, can be freely and legally obtained online from all sorts of places. The one I screenshot was: https://fermatslibrary.com/s/does-the-inertia-of-a-body-depend-upon-its-energy-content ]

My two modifications appear both in red pen (well, red pen digital effect from my Apple Pencil on my iPad):

1) The word "ENERGY" in the title has been crossed out and replaced with "MIDICHLORIAN"

2) "A. EINSTEIN" in the byline has been crossed out and replaced with "Me!"

How dare Disney+ de facto impose last minute moral obligations on those among the tech savvy who celebrate Yom Kippur! Atonement now requires www.plex.tv/personal-med... !!! In closing and maybe more amusingly, here's a meme I manually mashed up with Paint, not AI [see ALT text for source material].
A picture of a lightsaber-brandishing Mickey Mouse as Darth Vader flanked by two cute-ified stormtroopers. Darth Mickey himself looks pretty stern though. Notably, Darth Mickey's helmet doesn't have a mask so you can see his face clearly and, of course, the helmet comically accomodates Mickey's iconic mouse ears.

Above the trio, the text of the classic Darth Vader quote to Lando in _The Empire Strikes Back_ appears: "I have altered the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further." It's a font very evocative of the characteristic cursive of Walt Disney himself that has been immortalized in Disney's corporate logo.

Copyright attribution: So, in what hopefully is fair use as both parody and non-commercial intent [note: I'm not a lawyer... also, I'm not rich, so please don't sue me ;) ], I should mentioned I made this the old-fashioned way in Microsoft Paint using:

1) This design from the Etsy store "TusemyDesign" https://www.etsy.com/listing/1860109406/disney-mickey-star-wars-png-star-wars for the primary picture of Darth Mickey and his 2 cute-ified stormtroopers,

2 points, 1 silly & 1 serious: 1) We're so close having a reliable dog landscaper! YOU WANT CHINA TO GET ONE FIRST?! Oh right, that quote of Cal Newport was a *metaphor*. 🙄 Anyway, a sufficiently-trained dog able to deploy all known (and some unknown) cybersecurity exploits sounds good too! 🤩
An animated WEBP file of Snoopy in a straw gardening hat, with a bag of seeds and a watering can frolicking back and forth across a field planting and watering... and since it's a cartoon having little 3 leaved green spouts immediately appear. 1/2 As a red-blooded man, I must confess I had the usual reaction to watching Ms. Sweeney describe this oh-so-cleverly-named sports betting site --- whoops, "prediction market" --- NOVIG as "No betting on wars or deaths, and no politics. Just you: your takes on sports." Namely, I thought of...
Quote graphic of the 3rd paragraph of William James's famous 1910 essay "The Moral Equivalent of War". White text on a black background reading as follows:

"Modern war is so expensive that we feel trade to be a better avenue to plunder; but modern man inherits all the innate pugnacity and all the love of glory of his ancestors. Showing war's irrationality and horror is of no effect on him. The horrors make the fascination. War is the strong life; it is life in extremis; war taxes are the only ones men never hesitate to pay, as the budgets of all nations show us."

... tragedy being Issue #2 "Absent Friends" of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's seminal 1986 12-issue limited series _Watchmen_, and then as farce when _The Simpsons Comics_ did their parody "Splotchman" in _Simpsons Super Spectacular #13_ in 2011...
The much abbreviated _Simpsons Comics_ take on the Issue #2 _Watchmen_ triptych for Night Owl's memory of The Comedian. Here, Bart as the Batman-esque-but-mostly-a-graffiti-artist-and-force-of-chaos "El Barto" subs in for Night Owl, and of course Krusty the Clown is playing The Comedian. And _The Simpsons Comics_ writers just cut to the chase and the only dialogue is El Barto lamenting "What's happened to the American Dream?" and Krusty-as-the-Comedian pointing at himself saying "It came true. You're looking at it." Blasphemous as it is to say, I think Krusty-as-the-Comedian is a better indictment of the true ethos of American than the actual Comedian! YMMV. ;)

Apropos of @wrexywrex.bsky.social lament that nobody reads the original anymore and just knows the major motion picture adaptation (which, while a defensible lament generally, is probably *not* the case with _Watchmen_ specifically), here's the originals --- plural! --- first as tragedy...
Classic triptych from Issue 2 "Absent Friends" of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's 1986 magnum opus 12-issue limited series _Watchmen_. The triptych depicts a flashback of one of the 2 characters depicted, Night Owel (the Batman-ish-but-more-nebbishy-and-nicer-type hero).

In it, Night Owl recalls the 1977 dubious exploits of him and The Comedian (the Joker-ish-but-a-"hero"-and-more-amoral-than-crazy-and-more-just-shooting-people-than-any-whacky-murder-methods-also-drawing-a-paycheck-from-Uncle-Sam) putting down the 1977 riots in their fictional alternate NYC due to a police strike.

Left Panel: Night Owl and Comedian depicted from behind and at a distance looking at graffiti on a wall (the Comedian just shot the person who did the graffiti). The graffiti says "Who Watches the Watchmen". The Comedian remarks: "*Ha!* You see this! I seen that written up all *over* durin' this last two weeks. They *don't* like us. They don't *trust* us." To which Night Owl laments: "This whole situation --- it's *horrible*"

Center Panel: The Comedian responds, in his characteristic sociopathic amoral way, disagreeing: "Well, me, I kinda *like* it when things get *weird* y'know? I like it when all the *cards* are on the table. Night Owl defends the normie sentiment that these NYC-wide, multiweek riots are horrible, saying "But the country's *disintegrating*! What's *happened* to the American *Dream*?"

Right Panel: The punchline from the Comedian, "It came *true* You're *lookin'* at it" pointing at himself, a man wearing a S&M leather mask, body armor and holding an assault rifle. And he then says, "Now *c'mon*. Let's *really* put these jokers through some changes."

But, I dare say, _The Simpsons_ cracked it:
Famous line from _The Simpsons_ S11E22 where Homer, in a parody of those VH1 "Behind the Music" documentaries that tended to cover the drug-fueled escapades and travails of classic rock stars, is being interviewed in a documentary "Behind the Laughter" and is confessing the occasional cartoonishly extreme physical punishment he endured on the show led him to abuse painkillers.

Well, it's plausible that we do... at least in the sense that there have in fact been numerous --- many of them televised, no less! --- of bears quite intentionally starting fires:
Yogi Bear and Boo Boo roasting 2 sausages and 3 marshmellows over a campfire that, in sharp contrast to the fire safety promoted by fellow famous bear Smokey the Bear, doesn't really seem to be within a firepit or at least a clear expanse of dirt without grass that could catch fire... Yogi and Boo Boo just freakin' put 2 logs atop the grass and lit a fire!! Don't try that at home (or in the forest... but that's their home), kids!!Continuing the theme of Yogi Bear showing things you definitely should not try at home, kids: Here's Yogi mischieviously sneaking up behind Ranger Smith while the Ranger is patriotically saluting and holding a minature American flag and then lighting a cartoonishly large firecracker at the Ranger's feet! For shame, Yogi!! Bad role model for the kids!!!

I can only assume that RFK, Jr. will soon be updating the Food Pyramid once again, this time to:
"Easter Egg" from the movie _Idiocracy_. It's a parody of the "Food Pyramid" graphic that the US government uses to depict a healthy diet, replacing the normal food categories of grains, meats, fruits & vegetables, dairy, etc. with (bottom to top):

Bottommost Layer: "Caffeine, Smokes, & Convenience Group" illustrated with 3 entries, L to R: A Starbucks-like logo, and then two casual restaurant parody logos, a red-letter "Tarrlytons" and a yellow-letter "FLATURIN")

Second Layer: "Brawndo A Shitload" and "Grease Group 3-4 Servings" illustrated respectively with the Gatorade-logo parodying "BRAWNDO" logo (Brawndo in Idiocracy is not only a caffeinated Gatorade, but also --- as a central plot point, the primary irrigation for agriculture! "It's got electrolytes! What plants crave!" as Brawndo's ad slogan goes, a clever ploy to maximize Brawndo sales) and then on the right for the grease group, a five pointed yellow star with a frowny face.

Second-to-Top Layer: "BRAWNDO MORE" and "BRAWNDO EVEN MORE", both again illustrated with the BRAWNDO logo.

Top Layer: "BRAWNDO MOST EACH DAY", with the BRAWNDO logo yet again.

And title on top: "FDA Food Pyramid" in large black text and the subtitle below it in smaller black text "A Guide to Daily Food Choices"

1/2 I'm maybe a little anxious these days, but this _Hollywood Reporter_ story on Klein with no obvious news hook at all (no new book out, no new role at the NYTimes, no further "glow up" atop his previous glow up, etc) makes me think of this classic _xkcd_ comic: imgs.xkcd.com/comics/clums... ...
The webcomic _xkcd_ "1387: Clumsy Foreshadowing" in its entirety (m.xkcd.com/1387/). To "cut to the chase", I'll list the bottom panel punchline first: "To make news stories seem way more ominous, imagine you're hearing them from a background TV in a movie as the main character leaves". To that end, the top panel lists 3 news stories purportedly from the day the comic came out: "Today's News: --North Korea Threatens US over Upcoming Movie --Shark Populations Booming of East Coast --SpaceX to Attempt New Rocket Launch Today". Then in the main middle panel you see on the left the stick figure of a man [_xckd_ is illustrated in stick-figure style art for all the characters] with his coat on his arm saying cheerfully as he walks out of his kitchen "Bye! See you tonight!" And out-of-the-panel to the right, his partner's text is written "Have a good day!" And right in the middle is a TV on the table with a newscaster saying "Researchers are reporting record numbers of sharks..."

Oh, took me a moment to realize that's the _West Wing_ prequel that was Cronenberg's _The Dead Zone_ rather than the _West Wing_ prequel that I thought you would be alluding to, Coppola's _Apocalypse Now_. God, President Bartlett truly had an amazing backstory!
Two panel still picture meme of the famous scene from Coppola's _Apocalypse Now_ ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078788/ ) in which Colonel Kurtz (played by Marlon Brando) confronts Captain Willard (played by Martin Sheen) in Kurtz's barely torch-lit hut in his crazy-looking, barely-torch-lit, deep-in-Vietnam village... a metaphorical "Heart of Darkness", as it were (since _Apocalypse Now_ is a loose version of Joseph Conrad's famous 1899 novella _Heart of Darkness_ --- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_Darkness --- transported-from-1890ish-Congo-to-1970ish-Vietnam).

[Top Panel of Meme] Closeup on Kurtz --- i.e., Brando seated in his (in)famous, bald, sweaty, making-no-eye-contact-with-the-camera demeanor, additionally making interesting acting choices to boot by mostly just slowly rubbing his bald head --- asking Willard:

      "Are my methods unsound?"

[Bottom Panel] Willard --- i.e., a young, grimey, jungle soldier looking Martin Sheen --- replying:

"I don't see any method at all, sir."

The administration in Kyiv aims to reduce the Kremlin’s ability to export oil and reap windfall profits from a global crude price hike, driven by the war in the Middle East. Last month, Ukrainian drones damaged oil facilities in Primorsk and Ust-Luga, Russia’s key ports on the Baltic coast. Moscow in turn has been attacking power, gas and railway infrastructure in Ukraine.

The relentless drone strikes on oil ports reduced Russia’s seaborne exports in March to the lowest in two months, according to Bloomberg calculations. The slump comes as the ongoing war in the Middle East has triggered an unprecedented oil-supply shock across the world.

Sorry, can't resist...
Famous scene from th perennial Christmas classic _It's a Wonderful Life_, which debuted in Dec 1946 [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_a_Wonderful_Life ]. In this scene, George Bailey (played by Jimmy Stewart), the local pillar of the community and savings & loan banker to the lil' hamlet of Bedford Falls, tries to allay the fears of all his customers who've started a run on his lil' Bailey Savings & Loan, explaining (as is captioned on the photo):

"You're thinking of this place all wrong. As if I had the money back in a safe. The money's not here. Your money is in Joe's house... right next to yours, and in the Kennedy house. And Mrs. Macklin's house, and a hundred others. Why, you're lending them the money to build, and then, they're going to pay it back to you as best they can. Now what are you going to do? Foreclose on them?"

Correction: Yeah, it is temporary relief... should've just included the final bit of the order, which btw in case any of you are waiting with bated breath is actually: plaintiffs submit their argument about confidentiality by close of business Mon 3/16, defendents reply 3/17 and hearing 3/17...
The final part of the judges order making clear it is but temporary relief and stating the timetable for that temporary relief to move to final decision. It reads:

3. Plaintiffs must respond in writing to the Government’s motion by the close of business on Monday, March 16, 2026. In their submission, Plaintiffs shall address whether Defendants sought to designate any portion [...]

[page break]
[new page header Case 1:25-cv-03923-CM Document 151 Filed 03/13/26]

[3. continued] [...] deposition testimony or recordings as “Confidential Information” pursuant to the procedures set out in Paragraph 8 of the Stipulation and Protective Order. [which again is just the name for the agreement the plaintiffs and defendants had entered into before discovery began]

4. Defendants may file a reply by the close of business on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

5. The Court will hold a hearing on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Courtroom 24A, Moynihan Courthouse.

This Order is entered solely to preserve the status quo pending the Court’s considerationof the parties’ arguments.

SO ORDERED.

4/n ...at hand right before the "Accordingly, it is hereby ORDERED..." part is, in my again lay opinion, pretty lame *since the judge admits it was NOT made clear to the court whether that procedure requesting confidentiality was followed*:
Screenshot of the Judge's Order, with the summary of facts at hand highlighted in blue right before the "Accordingly, itt is hereby ORDERED that" part of the Order.

That summary reads [with comments in brackets being my own]:

"Thus, while the Protective Order [i.e., the agreement before discovery between plaintiffs and defendants] contemplates that discovery material designated as confidential may not be disseminated publicly, it also establishes a specific mechanism by which deposition testimony is to be designated as confidential. The Court has not yet been informed whether the procedures set out in Paragraph 8 [i.e., the relevant part of the agreement aka "Protective Order"] were invoked with respect to the deposition testimony or recordings at issue here."

Since no one seems to have posted a screenshot of the full "Seasoned Journalist $500,000" snippet yet, here's my old-timey Boy Scouting "good deed for the day"
Screenshot of the linked New York Magazine "What Do People Make" article? specifically the "Seasoned Journalist" snippet

Seasoned Journalist

$500,000
$250,000 from journalism
$250,000 from investments

I’ve always been a 1099 guy. My journalism income comes from a lot of different places, including my regular column, but everything is funneled through my literary agent, who takes 15 percent. When you write an op-ed for the Times, you suck it up and just take what they give you. When I was writing for magazines in the late 2000s, I was making around $5 per word; the price now is a lot less. I write books, too. I’m always kind of surprised when I get to April 15 and my accountant presents me with what I owe. I don’t know how I’ve been able to — year after year — keep this going. I’m not personally worried about AI, but, you know, I’m at the end of my career.

"Friends" is a beloved American sitcom that aired from 1994 to 2004, following six young adults—Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe—living in New York City. The show explores their friendships, romances, careers, and personal growth over ten seasons.
As the joke of the thread is to choose a picture of an ensemble cast -- ideally 3 men and 3 women, but needn't be strict -- that *isn't* the _Friends_ cast, I chose this picture of _The Big Bang Theory_ cast, here all sitting on the couch and the floor having Chinese takeout for dinner with L to R, Bernadette (played by Melissa Rauch), Howard (Simon Hedberg), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Amy (Mayim Bialik), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar).

4/n But, maybe I'm confused too, but when I now check again using the Boston Globle mobile app (on my iPhone, maybe it's different in Android, but I assume it's a browser vs mobile app issue), I *don't* see any *Globe* share (or comment, either) icons anywhere, but rather the *iPhone* share icon...
The usual iPhone (indeed mobile app) generally share icon of a square with an up arrow coming out its top. Sorry if Bsky grossly enlarged the picture.

3/n ... "Share" icon, but if you scroll down the article just a little, the top banner row changes and you will see it, along with the icon to comment on the article etc. (See 2 attached screenshots demonstrating the need to scroll just a little to see it.)
Screenshot of same Boston Globe article mentioned in the prior post, but on Google Chrome on an Samsung Galaxy Tab 9. This screenshot demonstrates how the share (also comment) icons are hidden initially at the very top off an article.Screenshot of the same article, again Google Chrome on a Samsung Galaxy 9 tablet, here showing if you just scroll down a little, then the top banner changes and you do see the curved arrow share icon and the text bubble comment icon.

1/n So first, in a pleasant surprise (maybe a recently instituted one?), when I used my *laptop's browser* [which is (1) something I don't normally do, but more importantly (2) is the Globe's "desktop site" in terms of layout not the "mobile" one], I do see finally a clear "Gift an Article" option!
Screenshot of Bostonglobe.com on 2026-02-15 circa 11:15pm EST, specifically an article named "Healy targets Trump, GOP rivals as she opens reelection campaign for governor". The key thing, however, isn't the article but that I've opened the share menu by clicking on the curved arrow icon in the sorta upper right-ish corner of the screenshot to show the shared options... which now --- again "desktop site", not "mobile" to my knowledge --- explicitly does have a "Gift an Article" option.

And to think that a mere 3 years ago the US government was laughing *with* the Finns as it welcomed them and their legendary prowess in cold-weather operations into NATO, instead of being laughed *at* now by the Finns and other top-tier NATO "Arctic-capable" forces... and presumably Russia too. Oy!
Screenshot of a cheeky tweet from the US Embassy in Prague welcoming Finland to NATO on 2023-04-03. The tweet includes a parody of one of those CAPTCHAs by which you prove your're not a bot. In this case, it's a picture of a snowy forest divided into a 3 row by 4 column grid with the instruction "Select all images with Finnish snipers" and the morbid joke is all 12 grid squares are clicked.

Ambitious men reigned.
A writing prompt: on a black background, along the left edge, a drawing of a vertical yellow pencil with blood dripping down it and then right of that drawing, the text "Write a horror story using only 3 Words" (Yes, "Words" weirdly IMHO is capitalized and there's no sentence ending period.)

Snoopy and 3 of his brothers having breakfast in bed (left to right: 1. Andy --- who looks exactly like Snoopy if Snoopy's fur was always frizzy, 2, Spike --- Snoopy's brother who famously lives as kinda a hermit out in the Mojave Desert near Needles, CA and thus looks like a much thinner version of Snoopy who also wears a sorta cowboy hat and sports a long droopy whisker-y mustache, 3. Snoopy himself, and then 4. Olaf -- who looks like a much chubbier version of Snoopy who additionally always wears a flapped hunter's cap); Extra Context: It's a panel from the _Peanuts_ comic that ran on February 22, 1994. The bed they're all in is in fact a hospital bed (not terribly obvious from the panel itself... there aren't any IVs or monitoring devices or anything like that) as Snoopy found himself in the hospital with an unspecified serious illness and his 3 brothers Andy, Spike, and Olaf suddenly came in to visit him.

I think this is step 1 of Pope Leo's verrrrrry long run plan giving the long-suffering sistren of the Church a consolation prize. Ordination of women priests: No. BUT approval to become Bene Gesserit to covertly shepherd humanity in the upcoming Butlerian Jihad against the thinking machines: Yes!!
From the film _Dune: Part One_ (2021) directed by Denis Villeneuve. Two black robed sisters of the Bene Gesserit order stand in a very dark shadowy setting: Lady Jessica Atreides (played by Rebecca Ferguson, facing camera) and Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Moheim (played by Charlotte Rampling, facing away from camera). The Reverend Mother reminds Lady Jessica "But our plans are measured in centuries..."

Most definitely!
A cute smiling cartoon Frankenstein's Monster* giving two big thumbs up ahead of a background that I imagine is supposed to be a night sky, albeit recolored to be very Halloween-y, i.e., an orange sky, black dots as stars and a yellow moon. There's also 3 cartoon bats flying in the sky.

*I forget where I first saw the joke, but it's very true:

A person who doesn't really know the Frankenstein story will call the monster Frankenstein, not realizing the scientist is Dr. Frankenstein, and the monnster is the monster.

An overly literally-minded or pedantic reader who's read the story will never tire of pointing out the above fact, i.e., the human scientist is Dr. Frankenstein and the reanimated monster is "Frankenstein's Monster".

But someone who understands the story realizes: Dr. Frankenstein is the actual monster. The "monster" isn't a monster, rather he's a tragic hero of sorts.

It's funny 'cause it's true!

Scene from the 1986 movie _Aliens_ (the 2nd in the now too-numerous-for-me-to-count franchise, and that's just the movies). Lt. Ellen Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) sits to the left of the android Bishop (played by Lance Henriksen) and says with surprise and worry to her other human crewmates (you'll have to watch the movie to see why she's surprised, and you'll have to watch the first installment, 1979's _Alien_, to know why Ripley is highly suspicious of androids):

"You never said anything about an android being on board. Why not?"

To which Bishop replies, making a wry political correctness joke that's both of the real-world time (again, 1986) and evidently the fictional world's time (2179!... jeez, does society ever settle these issues?):

"I prefer the term 'artificial person' myself."

But BHL isn't just a "commanding hairstyle". He has that whole fancy-shirt-with-too-many-buttons-unbuttoned thing going on that IMHO goes beyond "he's a rakish intellectual who galavants among the glitterati at Cannes" to "umm, maybe he's about to take the floor at a ballroom dance competition?"

Black-and-white line-drawing style cartoon / comic panel: It shows a hallway with a doorway labelled "Time Machine Development Lab", and hanging on its doorknob is a sign "Out to Lunch - Be Back Yesterday". The cartoonist's signature is at the bottom right and looks to my eyes like "White". I must admit I don't know the full name of the cartoonist.

Apropos of the references in this thread to "Wilhoit's Law" (ie, "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.") and the Ralph Wiggum meme "I'm helping", I'll just add:
Meme of a classic moment from _The Simpsons_:

MARGE (in handcuffs, getting arrested by Springfield's dynamic duo of beat cops, Eddie and Lou): I thought you said the law was powerless.

CHIEF WIGGUM (while eating an ice cream cone... Marge had made a disturbance in Springfield's ice cream shoppe): Powerless to help you, not punish you.

Context: This is the episode in which the main plot is that Marge becomes paranoid that the new family babysitter is effectively taking her place in the affections of her family, and maybe even planning to kill her and literally take her place in the family. Marge had previously gone to Chief Wiggum to demand he investigate her suspicions that the babysitter was planning to murder her. Wiggum, with his characteristic incompetence, told her what he claimed he tells everyone: "The law is powerless to help you." So, that's why Marge is surprised she's getting arrested after causing a scene in Springfield's ice cream shoppe over this issue.

Well, I suppose Kissinger's infamous summary to Haig on Dec 9, 1970 of Nixon's order on bombing Cambodia, namely... "Anything that flies against anything that moves" ... is a very diverse, equitable, and inclusive order. nsarchive2.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEB...
Transcript from George Washington University's National Security Archive -- same link as main post https://nsarchive2.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB123/3%20%20Kissinger%20telcon%20with%20Haig.pdf -- showing a transcript of the infamous phone call of Dec 9, 1970 from then National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger to his then deputy Gen. Alexander Haig in which Kissinger summarized President Nixon's desire for a truly massive bombing campaign against Cambodia as "anything that flies against anything that moves"

While I understand that "Once in a Lifetime" would be thought by many fans as a too mainstream, too vanilla choice, I nonetheless doubly assert it's my favorite for the meta-textual reason that "Once in a Lifetime" led to this IMHO astoundingly good poem by the American poet Jessica L. Walsh:
Picture of the official poster the poet Jessica L. Walsh sells of what's probably her most popular poem, "When My Daughter Tells Me I Was Never Punk". It's styled to look like a slightly crumpled up page out of a typewriter with the text of the poem typewritten except for two things written in red marker: the word "Punk" in the title, and then the closing 4 words. I put asterisks around both of these. Here's the text of the poem:

WHEN MY DAUGHTER TELLS ME I WAS NEVER *PUNK*

I say, hon, my being alive is punk. I made my life
out of grudges when I saw the odds placed against me,

when my role was to marry a man who’d kill me
and give me a hot young death, a guy named Charles

who would have and nearly did—the day I said fuck you
and threw his keys in the snow? That was punk.

When I called a nice guy who’d loved me steady
and thought what if I can try staying alive, that was punk;

when I had my last drink and surrendered the scene, that too was punk,
and yes I miss the me who would be dead

because I was a bottle rocket, a pipe bomb of a good time
but my being alive is the middle finger I never put down—

I did not let these days go by, I clawed each one from dirt,
When I get my nails done I am cleaning weapons,

when I buy food, when I fill the tank,
I am threatening to survive long enough to piss off

a million awful people to be alive in spite of,
I am promising to stay fragrantly alive:

This is my beautiful house. I am this beautiful wife.
How did I get here? I say, *By my fucking teeth.*

Wow, pop culture depictions of ex-Marines enforcing the law as individual citizens have gotten way grittier in the past 60 years since Gomer Pyle... hell, this one's from *Disney* for Pete's sake (which has also gotten way grittier at times in the past 60 years)...
Scene from the Disney+ series _Daredevil: Born Again_ wherein Frank Castle aka The Punisher (played by Jon Bernthal) is pushing up against a wall Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox). They're actually friends... or at least more friends than even frenemies. 🙄 (oh right, alt text... that was an eye roll emoji)

2/ ...address them. A few notable ones IMHO -- and note, I am not an expert -- are: (A) 2020 with the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent summer of protests was the low point of American attitudes toward police in general (vs *your local force*), eg, this Gallup series '93-'24 for all adults
Gallup time series "Americans' Confidence in the Police, 1993-2024" -- specifically the question "How much confidence do you, yourself, have in the police -- a great deal, quite a lot, some, or very little?" The x-axis is year, again 1993-2024 (with explicit tick marks every 4 years starting in 1994 going to 2022). The y-axis is % of adults saying either a "Great deal" or "Quite a lot", and spans 0% to 80% (with explicit tick marks every 10% pts). Broadly, the series oscillates between roughly 52-60% for the vast majority of 1993-2019, notably going up from like 52% in 1993 to 64% in 2004 when, hand-wavingly, one might argue the first few years of the post-9/11/2001 terrorist attacks-moment led to the high point. Since 2004 one might argue there's a slow steady decline, from again 64ish% in 2004 down to about 45ish% in 2023 -- notably it's only the years 2019-2023 that are at 50% or less. But there's an uptick to 51% in 2024.

"Radical centrist"... oh, how it all makes sense. That's why your profile pic at the other place has Riri Williams, one of the most radically centrist characters Marvel Comics ever produced! pbs.twimg.com/profile_bann...
Part of a panel from the _Ironheart_ Marvel comic that's part of Jane Coaston's Twitter profile pic. In the panel, a helmet-less Riri Williams (Ironheart) says, "I didn't. Didn't try. I've seen enough." (I, alas, forget the context of when and to whom she's explaining her decision to act. I swear Google Images used to immediately bring one to a post explaining that if you fed it Jane's Twitter profile pic, but now Google Images links are largely polluted by umpteen billion people preemptorily complaining about the upcoming-as-I-write-this-on-June-5-2025 _Ironheart_ series on Disney+. :'(

First, and 100% seriously, way to go! As hokey as it sounds coming out of my usually horribly cynical mouth, you are truly inspirational! :) Second, and at least 50% a joke, by you saying "We don't need a liberal Joe Rogan", OMG! IT'S OBVIOUS NOW!! *YOU* ARE THE LIBERAL JOE ROGAN WE'VE SOUGHT!!!
Famous scene from Monty Python's _The Life of Brian_, a satire on not-so-much Christianity itself but people's need for a messiah. Top half: Brian (played by Graham Chapman), in stereotypical moderate-budget 1st Century CE outfit for a poor Jew in the Holy Land (somewhat frayed robe and white skullcap) is exclaiming quite distraught to the throngs of followers (off-camera) who have approached him: "Will you please listen? I am not the messiah." Bottom half: The throng of followers, in similar stereotypical moderate-budget 1st Century CE outfits, awed by Brian's humble response comically draw the opposite conclusion, all exclaiming "HE IS THE MESSIAH!" with many falling to their knees as well. :)
