“Black cats are not photogenic” I beg to differ. Meet Max the Manx. #HappyCaturday #AdoptDontShop #kittens Notes in alt text

Gary Larson cartoon. A woman is in her living room, talking on the phone.

"Hello, Emily. This is Gladys Murphy up the street. Fine, thanks. ... Say, Emily, could you go to your window and describe what's in my front yard?"

Her back is turned to the front window where you can see a giant eye looking in.

RIP Annie Dillard Do read the essay about being one of her students by Alexander Chee

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.
- Annie Dillard

Ms Rose (16) is at the vet today to have some teeth removed. Not fun when you’re an older cat (not fun ever). Please keep a good thought.

Our Leo as a puppy. Go well, stay well. Notes in alt text

A three month old GS / Malnois mix. He has golden fur, deep brown eyes and a black nose. He came to us through a rescue group as a foster puppy, and never left. Here he is breaking our “No dogs on the couch rule” on day one.

Leo is eleven now, and deeply loved. The couch is his.

Happy #Caturday. The weather is colder so we broke out the heated cat beds. Rose approves. Older cats feel the cold more easily. I can relate. Rose is n indoor only cat but she still gets a chill. I wonder how she would respond to a comfy cat sweater? Notes in alt text. #cats #CatsOfBlueSky

Photo of our 16 year old black and white cat, Rose. She is sleeping in the sun, on top of a light blue and white blanket which is inside a heated cat bed. The bed itself is in front of a window inside my home office, and on top of a low filing cabinet. Prime real estate if you are a cat.

I am so very sorry. We lost our sweet, eccentric Kamiko last year. She was 16. Sending love across the ocean, and holding you all in my heart.

Photo of a plump, female Tuxedo cat with velvety black fur, white paws and a white triangle on her chest. Her eyes are gold and her white whiskers are very long and elegant. She is looking at the camera, and sitting in a her carpeted cat tree. The cat tree is near our front window where she loved to watch birds and enjoy the morning sun.

Our big golden shepherd mix Leo is laying quietly on the floor with his right front paw outstretched. A black and white kitten is approaching him with their tale up and ears forward (so not scared but curious) and the two are about to touch noses.

Happy #InternationalDogDay from Leo who was rescued as a puppy, raised by us, and our five cats, and who speaks cat. Leo is now 11 and he has helped us raise dozens of foster kittens. He is the goodest boy. We’d never adopted a puppy before, and a firm house rule was “No dogs on the couch”.

A large, golden shepherd mix with a black nose lays on the comfy couch with his tabby friend cat, Mackie. They have stolen the sand colored covers and the pillows and there is no room for me. I think Mackie just ordered a few things online.

Below is a short, well written history of some uniquely clever Icelandic sheep. Here are photos of the “Leader Sheep” in question, and the black volcanic sands which can make traveling with a herd so dangerous. #Iceland #Sheep #Vikings

Iceland has very few trees as most were cut down by Viking settlers. There is a movement on to rebuild the forests but it is slow going.

Our shy but mighty House Panther Arlet. She was a foster, and medical issues meant she couldn’t manage in the shelter so we adopted her. She became a loving sibling to our cats and dogs, and a dear, eccentric member of our family. Here she is birdwatching in her favorite chair. #BlackCats

Photo of a short haired black cat with yellow eyes. She is sitting in a dark green chair, on a white faux sheep skin blanket with a red, green and brown checkered pillow agains her back. I’ve seen many young people choose a kitten with the support of their family. If you pay attention, and look closely, often times the kitten chose them first. Choosing the Kitten 2016. Photo: mine Taken at the Cat Adoption Team shelter #cats #AdoptDontShop #kittens

No fires nearby. We do have a heatwave plus brown skies and bad air quality as smoke drifts in from the OR, WA and BC #wildfires. Leo has to wait for his pool time but The Engineer has filled it up for thirsty deer, and other mammals. Bird and bee baths are also full, and getting a lot of action

Happy #Caturday 🐈‍⬛ Here is our boy Leo, ace foster kitten nanny, and all around good boy.

A large golden German Shepherd mix named Leo is laying on the floor calmly watching two tabby foster kittens playing with a wand toy I dropped in front of them. Both kittens are inches away from Leo’s big, black shepherd nose, and both feel perfectly safe in his company. The baby tabbies have raised, happy tales and are definitely not done playing so Leo is being patient as he knows everyone gets fed soon, including him. His walk and favorite treats will soon follow.
