First day on the new job was alright. Feeling a bit high strung now. Did some piano practice. Might do some writing after dinner.

Oh dang I am hooting and hollering here.

After three months on this dang job hunt I finally got a job. Actually full time, too.

This EmeraldApple person just seems to chime in on whatever's trending on the feed. Nothing about what he's watching or reading or what movie he saw the other day or whathaveyou. Maybe this is the sort of thing you do when you buy a bluecheck. It seems empty to me.

This is the kind of thing you post when you have no actual interests, I feel. When some subculture is having fun with something that I have no personal interest in (for example, Petra Parker) I find I just don't comment on it. Because I'm not interested. This person has to chime in on trends?

Lately I've been reading some old-timey Sword & Sorcery literature (Jack Vance, Robert E. Howard, etc) and wanted to do something fun about weird wizards in their crazy manses.

Endless writer's block, really. I keep wanting to start a story, but then I go "oh I don't know how to start it. Also I can't think of a character name that does not sound both cool and not stupid."

Yeah. FA is so important to the community that donation drive type things is something that I think should definitely be done. I'd love to pitch in once I get some more success on the job hunt.

Donkey characters can be very cute and they seem to be a bit underappreciated, so I think that could be a fun opportunity.

Pirate Borg was quite fun, though admittedly I'm learning that GMing has lots of talents with managing to keep balls juggling in the air. Also found myself in the position of picking one thing on an encounter table and immediately wishing I'd picked a different thing on the table.

Have you been harassed by a transgender person on a dating app?

Ah, the joys of running tabletop games. Going to be running "Pirate Borg" tonight. I'm hoping that the pitch I made to my players is sufficient to prepare them for what's happening. Mild worries about some stuff as it is a very dark game.

Oh, James Arnold Taylor is fantastic. I just think it's an issue in a lot of video game voiceover production that a lot of the process was just "stick guy in booth, tell him to read line, don't tell him anything about what it's actually about."

I was hoping I would get through Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" before I got my library copy of Travis Baldtree's "Legends & Lattes," but unfortunately my reading speed is far from consistent. Still, ping-ponging through a variety of things, even if progress is somewhat slow.

I remember back in the day people would point to the laughing scene as an example of why the game was bad and I was always confused as to why.

If only it had better direction in the voice acting. But then it was extremely rare for voice actors to get any actual direction back then.

...an actor who does tabletop RPG podcasts has gotten them trying to do the whole "D&D got ruined by Critical Role and wokeness and theatre kids" stuff when most of the specific things the complain about with D&D predate Critical Role and can trace back to video games and Dragonlance.

Oh, the video game studio Double Fine is doing some collaboration with Erika Ishii, and reactionary gamer types are mad about that because they've decided Erika Ishii is bad because that was what the social media feed told them about Ghost of Yotei, and the fact that Erika Ishii is mostly just...

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Oh boy, the weirdos on twitter are complaining about Erika Ishii and "theater kids" in D&D. There is a certain crowd that will spend eternity relitigating Dragonlance while not even being aware that they're relitigating Dragonlance. They will fail, because Dragonlance won.

Ugh. Accounting review materials are too expensive. Getting ready to start studying for the CPA exam and that is not going to be easy or cheap.

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I'm very nostalgic for it, myself. I think the core ideas and the combat are very good, even if the line-to-line dialogue and poor acting direction are very cheesy.

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Respectfully, I see a bit of a contradiction between your earlier statements of being separate from Queer/LGBT communities and your apparent desire to speak for the singular collective of "all" transgender people. I can't speak to your life, but neither should you presume for others.
031
Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I don't find myself inclined to tell someone that their personal experiences are wrong. If we have here someone who fits into that 1% of transition regret rates, I'm not going to presume to know their life better than they do. A little ironic to chide me for not responding given the earlier mute.

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The analogy makes sense because I am drawing attention to the flaws in the Finnish study's control group. I know what your point is. I'm challenging your point by pointing out severe flaws in the study's methodology, and presenting you with studies that show the opposite result.
021
Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
This is not a response that leads me to the conclusion that you know and are friends with very many transgender people. Considering your fairly alarming expressions of prejudice I would be surprised if any wished to be friends with you. This Finnish study seems very off to me in its control group.

It would be like looking at people who have motor impairments, comparing them to able-bodied people, and then using that to draw negative conclusions about mobility aids. I have studies I can cite as well, for example a meta-analysis from Cornell. whatweknow.inequality.cornell.edu/topics/lgbt-...

What does the scholarly research say about the effect of gender transition on transgender well-being? | What We Know

That's very kind of you to say. I like to think that I'm in a position where I can try to exercise my rhetoric in a certain way, and that there is a responsible time and place to do so. It has limitations but I hope it has some uses.

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Perhaps if I had a hundred such friends I would have one who expressed regret. That would, statistically, match up with the match up with what we know about regret rates for gender-affirming care.
031
Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Surely it would come up at least one time in any of the queer social circles I've been in. I certainly daresay I'm in a fair few more of those than you are. I have yet to run into someone who's confided in me that they think they made some sort of mistake.

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
This kind of response is not conducive towards good-faith discussion. Looking through this and some other write-ups about the study, the control group appears to be the former, that is to say a general cisgender population. I see a problem with this.
121
Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
When this study refers to its control group, is it referring to a general (presumably cisgender) population or a dysphoric population that is not seeking transition?

Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Why aren't these unspecified "long-term research" results manifesting in a single transgender person that I know? Why aren't they manifesting with any of the transgender people who are telling you that you are wrong about their medical care? What do you think accounts for this discrepancy?
251
Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
They most certainly might be a great deal more rude to you than I am being, but given that one of them hit the like button on my post, I think it's safe to say that the difference is more one of tone than one of core ethos.
131
Bill Capra @itbillygote.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Well, if you are presenting your position as being one that's concerned about the well-being of people who are receiving treatment or medical care, it makes sense to look at what they themselves are telling you about that treatment and medical care, wouldn't it?

The argument that the transgender people responding to you have is "Please, stop acting like you know what's best for us. We want to live our own lives and you're not helping with anything."

Which part of this do you consider to be a relevant rebuttal to the simple argument "Russia chose to invade Ukraine as part of a revanchist goal and has been committing wanton war crimes, so I think that Ukraine is well within its rights to self-defense."?

"What if Die Hard but a school shooting?" is such a bad idea on its face. One reason, in my opinion, that Die Hard is such a good action movie is that its "rich crooks in a fancy office building" action premise is divorced enough from reality that it can just be fun. School shootings? Not fun.
